MWWB (Formerly Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard) are back with a stellar new album, “The Harvest”. This is not just an album though, it is more like a soundtrack to a movie that has not been made yet. If Pink Floyd wrote the soundtrack to Blade Runner they would have made something similar to this, just not as good. The whole release is written like one big continual piece, moving soundscapes and creating a wall of sound so heavy you feel like you are being crushed in the vastness of space (in a good way).
The opening track ‘Oblok Magellana’ opens this release with an eerie radio transmission which leads into the lead single ‘The Harvest’, a heavy and chugging song, full of crushing riffs and eerie synths, after this we get to ‘Interstellar Wrecking’ – another Sci-Fi movie score without a movie, Vangellis would be proud of this! ‘Logic Bomb’ then starts with a riff so tasty you have to pull a face when you hear it, or is that just me?
The bass tone rings through, holding together with the drums as the guitar and synths build more atmosphere for you to get lost in. Another instrumental next in ‘Betrayal’, with spoken word and kick drum almost making it a dance track. It paves the way for ‘Altamira’, a shredding guitar line to send you spiralling through a vortex of dread, although the stand out elements in this song are the vocals. The chorus sounds like an otherworldly figure delivering a message of impending doom. ‘Let’s Send These Bastards Whence They Came’ is more Moog driven glory from MWWB, sounding like a homage to Sci-Fi from a bygone era, building and building with more layers until ‘Strontium’ takes over your senses with a wall of guitars both heavy but melodious, again, the vocals here are strong, eerie and beautiful. Closing out the album is ‘Moon Rise’, a more relaxed composition to end your journey, stripped back to just Guitar and vocals it is a cathartic piece.
All in all, this album is superb and is a testament to MWWB’s songwriting. Every one instrument knows its place and does it well, the drums move forward holding each song together, the bass locks in and brings a heaviness in the undertone, the guitars build an atmosphere with the Synths, but for me the standout has to be the vocals, ethereal and melodic. I can’t wait to hear more from this band as they move on their journey.
