Belgium’s Patroness unleash some Dark Blackened Metal with debut release “Fatum”.
The opening track ‘Exordium’s short instrumental nature serves as an introduction for the album, leading into ‘Undeceive’ – which has a fantastic mid-section that as soon as it his immediately had me invested. It’s laden with really nice guitar sections too, weaving into ‘The Art of Being (Nothing)’ which take a different twist vocally, adding another dynamic which I’m still not positive if I’m a fan of.
Up next is the longest and my highlight track of the release ‘Seclusion’ every element in this track is very well pieced together. The vocals I wasn’t convinced of on the previous track make a return and in the context of this one, they work incredibly well – so at this point I’ve already decided it could do with re-listen. Following this is ‘Visions’. The heavier parts for me really save the tracks, as early on I hate to admit that I was ready to hit ‘skip’, but the heavier parts make for the heaviest of all the tracks on the album easily.
Slithers of sorrow that bring me joy appear in the form of ‘Foreshadow Oblivion’. It is by far the most emotion-evoking track, with the cleaner vocals almost having A Perfect Circle’s “Mer de Noms“ feel to it in places, which follows on into ‘Atonement’ – overall a great fifteen-minute section.
Gothic elements make themselves known with ‘Crows Upon the Throne’, before the track spirals into a 360 degree tailspin, with at parts feeling like a BlackMmetal track. Although there is a lot to digest in six minutes as the album ends, it’s conclusion with the final and title track ‘Fatum’ almost trying to convince the listener that the album is worthy of more focus and attention. How much of this will still be relevant after the next few listens who knows, maybe the elements I’m not keen on will fade away with the acknowledgement of all the elements I do.
