EMQ’s With LILITH’S REVENGE
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Portuguese Rock/Metal band, Lilith’s Revenge. Huge thanks to them for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hello, we’re Lilith’s Revenge!
Our music genre floats between Rock and Metal. We started the project back in the summer of 2020. Our lead singer is Paula Teles, the guitarists are Bruno Sousa and Paulo Silva, the bassist is Edu Silva, and Felipe Baptista has been working with us since April as our drummer, to replace our original drummer Joe, who left the band earlier in the year.
How did you come up with your band name?
Our lead singer, Paula, is the one behind the name. It’s actually a take on the idea that in some cultures, Lilith was Adam’s first wife in the Garden Of Eden, but was sent to hell for refusing to be submissive. Paula decided to use a lighter approach on the powerful “Lilith” character to represent our band, and our movement of fighting for gender equality, and fighting against oppression, physical, verbal and psychological abuse.
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We’re from the Porto district in Portugal. Our local music scene floats between traditional Portuguese folklore music, or a really heavy underground. Our country is famous for bands like Moonspell and Attik Demons.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Last May we released our latest music video, alongside the album “Children From Eden”. It’s our first studio album featuring 11 original songs.
Who have been your greatest influences?
There are many influencing the five of us, but from the top of our heads we can say Europe, Metallica, Guns n’ Roses, HEAT…
What first got you into music?
Our lead singer Paula got into music at an early age, learning to play the piano. She was very shy as a kid, so it was a way for her to open up to the world and become more sociable. Paulo’s dad was a musician in the local symphonic band, he played the clarinet and took little Paulo to rehearsals, and he developed a love for music back then. Bruno’s older brother also took on a big role in influencing Bruno by showing him Metallica when he was a kid, and being a guitarist himself, and Edu fell in love with the rock world as an escape, and when the chance appeared to feature in a band with Paulo and Bruno (a local project they had before Lilith’s, called Strings In Veins) he took it, and filled the empty position in the band as the bassist.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?
Each of us would probably say someone different, but it would be someone along the lines of Europe, Foreigner, Metallica and HEAT.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Probably from the top of our heads, it would be Rock Am Ring or Wacken. We grew up watching our favourite artists playing in both of these shows. One of Paulo’s and Edu’s favourite concerts is Dio live at Wacken.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
We’ve had a fan gifting us a little pin with our logo. It wasn’t exactly weird, but it was unexpected. It was nice to see someone took the time to create a little bit of “merch” to gift to us.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
It would definitely be a “thank you” kind of message. We’re so grateful. We’re just on the beginning of the road, and we already feel such loyal support from our fanbase. It’s more than we expected, and we couldn’t be happier, and we hope they stick with us all the way.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
We’re a bit divided between Cliff Burton and Ronnie James Dio, but probably considering we lost Cliff at such a young age and he had such a bright future and the world never got to see more of it, it would probably be him.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
We enjoy that we get to do this with friends, have fun and feel fulfilled while making some lives a bit better, considering we write songs meant to address issues that are relatable to everyone, and give them strength to fight and carry on. As of now we only hate how expensive it can all get (laughs). From trips to gear, to the studio! It’s a huge financial effort, but always feels worth it, because there’s probably not anything else we rather do.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Going back to the financial topic, it’s hard for artists to make money nowadays. There’s so much on offer, and we feel like people don’t take the time to sit down and properly listen to albums anymore, and end up just searching song radios with algorithm-mixed playlists from specific songs. We wished that somehow there was more financial funds to invest in more young artists.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
We can’t really pick (laughs). Bruno loves “Under a Godless Veil” by Draconian, and Edu loves “Ride The Lighting” by Metallica. Paulo with his classic rock influences would say “Frontiers” by Journey, and Paula would probably name “Rumours” from Fleetwood Mac.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?
We all agree on Vinyl! It’s really classy, and since it’s not as common nowadays, having a vinyl version of an album feels even more special.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Probably “Female Front Festival” in Portalegre in the south region of our country. It was the concert we played the furthest from our home, it was a two days trip, we did some sightseeing, visited a waterfall to chill and relaxed before the show, and at the venue we found an awesome backstage, stage, and staff. It was really fun, and the crowd was really into it. It was definitely a great experience.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Considering Paula is a singing teacher, Edu teaches Bass, and Bruno teaches guitar, I think we would probably be music teachers (laughs).
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Tarja, James Hetfield, Joey Tempest, Steve Harris and Corey Taylor.
What’s next for the band?
As of now we’re working on promoting on our latest release “Children From Eden” and we’re looking into signing with a label, and play more shows. We do plan to play abroad as soon as we have the chance. It’s something we all look forward too!
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
We shared our album for free on youtube, on our channel, so that would be one.
We also feature on music platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, etc
youtube channel: (51) lilithsrevengeband – YouTube
Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
They do go stale in a few days, so probably a cake? We’re not sure (laughs)
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Yes, we want to thank you for this interview, and we want to thank our fans, for being so supportive and being there all the time. Thank you.
