EMQ’s With PIRANHA
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Greek Death/ Thrash Metal band, Piranha! Huge thanks to them for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
We are Piranha from Greece and we were formed in 1987. We are one of the oldest Metal bands in Greece and we played Death / Thrash until 2001 (our dissolution). During its 14-year participation in the Greek metal scene, the band received great reviews from the music press around the world – but also managed to play together with many Greek bands such as Septic Flesh, Acid Death, Nightfall, Flames, Death Courier and also with major international names such as Destruction and Malevolent Creation. At the end of 2017, we were back after 16 years of silence with a multi-year record deal with 7hard. Our new album “Arise from the Shadows” is released worldwide on August 14 (2020) and it is our most aggressive release ever.
How did you come up with your band name?
We took our name from the well-known carnivorous fish, because we believe it represents the style of our music… fast, aggressive and deadly!!!!
What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We are from Athens, Greece. The Greek Metal scene is now recognized worldwide with awesome bands in all genres of Metal such as Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh, Suicidal Angels, Acid Death, Nightfall etc.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our latest work is the CD “Arise from the Shadows”, which was released by the German label 7Hard in August 2020. Where anyone who wants can get it, from us through the group’s social media (Facebook-Instagram) and from the music platforms.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Some of your musical influences are Death, Sepultura, Kreator and Children of Bodom.
What first got you into music?
From a young age we listened to and loved Metal music. And when we realized that we liked playing Metal more than anything, then it was the defining moment for each of us to grab the musical instrument we liked and make the band.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?
If it were possible, we would like to cooperate with Arch Enemy and Amon Amarth.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
That’s easy … we’d love to play Wacken Open Air and Hellfest if possible, because we think it’s a milestone for any metal musician to be part of these two huge festivals.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
I think it was a small black box (to store letters & small items) carved with skulls and painted with our logo on it.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Stay real and support the Underground Metal Scene.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
The father of Death Metal Chuck Schuldiner.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
We believe that as musicians we are given the opportunity to convey our feelings and opinions to the world through our music, and this is f….ing awesome!!!!! As you can see there is nothing to hate about being a musician.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Well, I think it would be the “fake” promotion / presentation that is often done to some songs to present them as the new trend of things.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Death – “Leprosy”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or downloads?
Vinyl of course.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
One of the best moments was the concert we did at the SEF stadium (Greece) that we played in front of more than 7.000 metalheads.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I can’t imagine ourselves doing anything other than music!!!!!!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
I think I would invite Ola Englund, James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Rob Halford and Scott Ian.
What’s next for the band?
Our priority for now is the concerts and the promotion of our cd “Arise from the Shadows”, as well as a new music video for our track ‘Eternal Night’.
What social media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Jaffa Cakes! Are they a cake or a biscuit?
A question that will remain unanswered HAHAHA!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
We would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to talk about our band / music. And we would also like to tell your readers to take care of themselves during these difficult times and to stay healthy and listen to Metal.
