EMQ’s With When Angels Came
EMQ’s With When Angels Came
Hi everyone. Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with South African/ Dutch Progressive Rock band, When Angels Came. Huge thanks to their Guitarist/ Lead Vocalist, Jacques, for taking part.
For those yet unfamiliar with you, please share with more about you, what you play, the bands you play in, and overall, more about your history?
Hi my name is Jacques I’m the lead singer and guitarist for When Angels Came. I’ve been playing guitar since the age of 15 and gravitated towards Hard Rock / Metal music. That’s my passion and what I enjoy listening and playing.
What country and region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
I’m from South Africa, currently living in the Netherlands with my family. the South African Rock / Metal scene is filled with super talented bands. So is the Netherlands, it’s a melting pot of artists and bands. There’s just so much happening right now after Covid.
Tell us about your latest release, and upcoming releases.
The new single ‘About You’ was written as a reminder and a promise to myself to never forget about the people that matter to me. Friends, family, loved ones, chase your dreams, successes and happiness, but remember, it’s a million times better to enjoy that moment or life with your loved ones around you. You have to remind yourself to not fall into that trap. You have everything to gain!
Who has been your greatest influences?
The 1st 3 albums I bought were Metallica “Load”, Green Day “Dookie” and Offspring “Smash”. But I grew up with my dad listening to bands like Boston, Foreigner, BonJovi, Meat Loaf and all the great 80’s / 90’s rock. I think that’s the combination of music I write today.
What first got you into music?
Definitely my Dad, he loves Rock music. Weekends they would have the best parties with music playing all weekend long. It was really my sister who started playing guitar who showed me how to play the basics. Nothing cool about playing “Leaving on a jet plane” back then. I wanted to rock out to Master of Puppets, ha ha! Thank goodness I found tabs.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Mark Tremonti
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
I really like the festivals in the US, big and loud. Download is up there for sure too.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
They come with gifts…?
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
See you at the show!!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Chester Bennington and Elvis.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Being free, allowing your emotions and story to be heard. It’s a great release and really helps me grow. If I have a bad day singing or playing guitar, it’s a shitty day. I hate bad tone or an out of tune guitar, ha ha!
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
More to the artists!
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Master of Puppets” by Metallica and “One Day Remains” by Alter Bridge.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?
I loved CDs back in the day, I read the booklets and really got into the story behind the album. Every CD I had I would listen from start to finish to really immerse myself.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
The next one!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Racing cars would be fun!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Mark Tremonti, James Hetfield, Jordan Peterson, Lizzy Hale and Johnny Cash
What’s next for you?
Finishing the album and getting that out as soon as possible!
What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Time for a very British question. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
A Bun?
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks for having me and supporting When Angels Came. Don’t miss our latest release ‘About You’ and thanks for listening.
