EMQ’s With Centershift

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with American Alternative Rock band, Centershift. Huge thanks to Guitarist, Ryan, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hello, my name is Ryan l play guitar in Centershift. The Band has ties between all members that span over a couple decades, and a couple of us have been in previous bands together over the years as well.

How did you come up with your band name?

We came up with the name, Centershift around the time the pandemic started, which definitely put the world on its side. In essence, we are all the same, but we are allowed to think differently and think for ourselves, and ultimately, we are all in this together.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are based out of Los Angeles, CA. The scene here is thriving to get back to what it was before the pandemic, where a lot of venues shut down temporarily and shows were limited. But also in that time, a lot of bands continued to write and record new music, and a lot of new bands formed as well. There are a lot of cool bands working hard to get back out there, and new ones making their way to do the same. There is a solid community of bands working together to make great shows and exposure happen locally.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our latest EP, called “Of” just came out in late August, and we also released a music video and single, for the song ‘From Where We Are’.

Who have been your greatest influences?

We all have a giant myriad of influences ranging from Punk, to Jazz, R&B, Metal, and Classical. But l would say we are greatly influenced by all bands and music that are doing something interesting and fresh, and those that can persevere through the ever-changing musical climate.

What first got you into music?

Being drawn to guitar at a very young age, l would say hearing Jimi Hendrix on the radio as a kid, and also growing up with MTV at that time, there was a lot of guitar oriented bands in the main rotation of what was played or seen.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

For me personally, someone like Jacob Collier, who is constantly pushing boundaries and re-writing the way things are done.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Any and all European festivals! Back in the early 2000’s l was in a band called, Shuvel, who toured Europe and we were fortunate to play a lot of festivals, and those were some of the best shows l’ve ever played.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I would say when someone brings food, once an Indian fan, brought his mother’s version of curry meatballs, they were amazing.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Have fun, enjoy life, be good to each other, and support live music, so the bands they like can keep coming to their towns.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Well, for me it would be Jimi Hendrix, l would love to jam and take lessons from him! Ha ha!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

My favourite thing about playing is that it is timeless, l get those same feelings as a 12 year old kid staring at my posters on the wall trying to emulate my heroes, and if we touch people with our music, or we have a positive influence on someone, that to me is everything. The only thing l hate is that l cannot play music all day long and tour nonstop like l would love to do.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I wish there was more of a mindset to help bring younger bands up with more known bands, to get proper exposure, and also to nurture their careers, help shape them and develop then into great songwriters and performers.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Metallica – “Master of Puppets”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?

I think all are the best as long as you’re able to hear the music whenever and wherever you want to.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

One of my favourites was playing festivals in front of 60,000 plus people, truly surreal.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

My other passions are cooking, and gardening.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Jack Kerouac, Charles Bulowski, Jim Carrey, Paul McCartney and Ram Dass.

What’s next for the band?

We are gearing up for our full length release closer to the end of the year, along with releasing more singles… writing new music for the next one, and continuously playing shows, and upcoming tours this upcoming year.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

I would guess a Roll.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I would just like to say thank you for the interview, and we thank everyone for listening and checking out the band and the music. Please share with a friend, and we hope to see you in your town playing a show soon!
