EMQ’s With Atomic Trip
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with French Instrumental Doom band, Atomic Trip. Huge thanks to their guitarist, JC, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi, I’m JC and I play guitar in Atomic Trip. Atomic Trip is an instrumental Doom band from Lyon, France and I play with Gary, also on guitar, and Grom on drums. Gary and I were former bandmates in Cult of Occult and Grom was our favourite tattoo artist. So, we decided to play music together just to be sure to meet for smoking, drinking and laughing every week.
How did you come up with your band name?
As an instrumental band, we couldn’t rely on lyrical themes to choose the band name, so we waited to find the musical direction we wanted to explore and then began searching for a name. Our music is as violent as trippy. It’s a bad psychedelic trip like it was induced by toxic steams. Atomic Trip, BOOM!
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We are from Lyon, France. I think the Metal scene is prolific and varied there and like in any other scene from any other city there is everything, quality-wise. Regarding Doom specifically, I’ve seen lots of bands taking the slow path, but few are still walking it…
What is your latest release?
We just released our third album “Strike #3”. It is available everywhere on streaming and on our bandcamp page on CD and tape. It will be available on vinyl soon via Tentacles Industries and a music video from the new track Bomb #6 will be dropped on January 17th.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Electric Wizard has always been the spearhead of Doom in our hearts. But we can definitely add Yob, Bongripper, Sleep, Neurosis, early Monolord or Mæntis and Dopelord as influences. And a special mention to Nirvana.
What first got you into music?
Wow, you’re speaking of a time that people under 20 cannot know (cf. Charles Aznavour). I must have been listening to music on car trips with my parents when I was very young. Music hits differently on a car trip.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Would love Björk to sing on our music. Björk, if you read this, the ball is in your court.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Roadburn because it is the Doom Mecca. Or Psycho Las Vegas because, huh, Las Vegas! But anyway, if any festival in the world invites us, even on the Moon, we’ll definitely go!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
I don’t remember receiving any gift from anyone haha! Their presence at a show is the best gift they can give us.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
COME. TO. THE. SHOWS. We need it more than ever.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Kurt Cobain. I think it is funny to bring someone who committed suicide back from the dead.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Life with bandmates. Just being a band with your best friends is the best. I hate how much things are difficult and ungrateful for touring.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I think that the less the music is elaborated and the more it is voted in; in other terms, the more it is shitty, the more it is exposed. Pretty sure that it must be because I’m a jealous unsuccessful musician on the other hand.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
KoRn. Perfection beyond perfection.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
For me CD’s. The only format I can listen to in my car and I listen to music alone in my car a lot.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Sylak Open Air in France was very fun because the sound was MASSIVE but it was in daylight, so I’ll go for the Black Heart in London. The venue is so cool, and it was the end of a very fun tour with our friends from Chubby Thunderous Bad Kush Masters. Full live video is available on YouTube by the way.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Certainly dead. If not, I would be a hobo on a beach in southwest of France.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
The leaders of the five biggest French political parties. And I’d burn that fucking house to the ground.
What’s next for the band?
Some gigs, wherever we want us, promoting Strike #3 and we already began working on the next one.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
I have absolutely no idea. Why not a A-hole bread? Would make sense.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks a lot for your time Ever Metal and do not forget to DOOM BOOZE FUZZ WEED every day!
