EMQ’s With Nothing Sacred
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Australian Power/Thrash Metal band, Nothing Sacred. Huge thanks to their Drummer, Sham, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hey guys, my name is Sham and I’m the drummer for Nothing Sacred. I’ve probably been playing for as long as most of your readers have been alive. I’m not sure that’s something I’m proud of but it’s probably a fact.
How did you come up with your band name?
We got the name nothing Sacred back in 1983 and it was given to us by a friend of ours Phil Crouch. We were called Heresy and Vengeance before Nothing Sacred, but those names just didn’t grab us. We just needed to be called something as we were already gigging
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We started playing here in Melbourne in the early 80’s. The scene here back then was awesome and quite big. That probably had to do with there being no international band coming here. Unfortunately, the local scene here has dropped considerably in size. Covid just made everything all the worse.
What is your latest release?
2021 we released our 1st album in a very long time titled “NoGods”. Since then, we have recorded a new 6 track EP titled “Leviathan”, due for release on the 3rd Feb. We have already released 2 singles and clips for the self-titled track ‘Leviathan’ and the 2nd track ‘Drone’. Both tracks were written and based on the war in Ukraine.
Who have been your greatest influences?
The honest question to that was no one. We all had different musical tastes back then plus it never incurred to us to write like our favourite bands. We just wrote tracks and hoped that people liked them. We still all have incredibly diverse musical tastes.
What first got you into music?
Kiss “Alive” was my introduction to wanting to play music. The only reason I ended up a drummer was because that was the only instrument left with all the kids I grew up with in my area.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
I would love to play with someone like Angelwitch.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Wacken, Keep it True or Hellfest. I’d just like to be able to go to them full stop. Playing at any of them would just make it all the better.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
A brown bear claw.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thank you so much for appreciating us.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
A younger Phil Taylor.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love writing and creating music. I like the thought of leaving something behind when I die.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
To make it viable enough that musicians can make a living from it.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Riot “Fire Down Under”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
All for the Metal for Melbourne’s.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I work as a youth worker in residential care looking after underprivileged kids.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Rob Hunter (Raven), Barriemore Barlow (Jethro Tull), Tomas Haake (Meshuggah), Phil Taylor (Motorhead “if he was still alive”), Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy).
What’s next for the band?
We’ve already started recording new material.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
A Tea Cake?
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks so much for taking interest in us. It’s much appreciated by us all.
