EMQ’s With Inferion

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with USA Blackened Melodic Death Metal band, Inferion. Huge thanks to their Vocalist/ Guitarist, Nick Reyes, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Nick Reyes. I play guitar and sing. We started in the mid-90s and released our first album in ’98. We were originally from Miami and we started off as a black metal band. Over the years our sound evolved keeping the bits that worked such as our intensity, speed, syncopated rhythms and aggression. Our first official release GIVEN TO THE GROUND put us on the map and allowed us to tour the US playing the Milwaukee metal Fest, the and the New Jersey metal Fest. With the release of FIREWAR in 2003 we were afforded the opportunity to tour in Europe and South America. We took a brief hiatus due to me joining the United States Army in 2008. In 2012 we put out THE DESOLATE and ABORTED BY THE SUN. In 2014 we signed with Horror Pain Gore Death and put out THIS WILL DECAY. We toured extensively with this will decay in the United States and South America as well playing several metal injection tours as well as a decibel Festival opening up for Abbath, Skeleton Witch and High on Fire. Currently, we are in the process of putting out a new album entitled INEQUITY through HPGD.

How did you come up with your band name?

In 1995 we were thinking up a unique band name. Obviously, this was before Google was as powerful as it is now so it was daunting coming up with something completely original. Being obsessed with fire as many teenage metalheads tend to be, we decided to create a word based off of that. Our bass player at the time came up with the word Inferion and it just stuck.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from the USA. The metal scene has evolved vastly over the last 20 years. When we first started, the tape trade was in full force and selling merch was relatively easy. It has evolved considerably with streaming platforms etc. The metal scene in South Florida is difficult to describe. There are certainly a lot more metal bands now, unfortunately, lots of metal fans and concert goers tend to only be concerned with bigger shows and festivals. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with covid or it’s just the natural progression of things.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our previous released album is THIS WILL DECAY. Currently we have GIVEN TO THE GROUND that has been reissued on digipak and we are working on our follow-up to THIS WILL DECAY entitled INEQUITY.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Bandwise I think my greatest influence has been At The Gates, Dimmu Borgir, Burzum, Darkthrone, Anata, Ulver, Filter, Slayer, Kataklysm, Deicide and Obituary.

What first got you into music?

The fact that when I was in high school I noticed chicks were into guitar players with long hair and leather jackets. LOL. Joke! I’ve always been into several different types of music and had a strong desire to want to learn how to play guitar.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

At The Gates.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Wacken. Because it’s probably one of the biggest metal festivals in the world. And I guess that’s a litmus test to know whether or not your band has made it.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

A bag of water. In Cali Colombia a fan of ours didn’t have enough money for Merch so she gave me a bag of water which I thought was kind of bizarre.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Stay in school, if you are out, go back. If you want to start a band, don’t let any shit bags tell you that you can’t or you shouldn’t or that you suck. Do shit that makes you happy. We’re all just bags of electricity and meat and we aren’t here for long so enjoy.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Jimi Hendrix

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I most enjoy playing music and playing music for other people. I detest know nothing critics given a platform that have unrealistic expectations of new music and attempt to compare every album to classic metal albums.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Compensation that bands get and how they are seen and treated by venues.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Filter – Short Bus

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

180g vinyl.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The funnest was probably opening up for Abbath on the Decibel tour in 2016.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Astrophysicist. Going to school for it now.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

The five that leave early, bring food and are good at chess.

What’s next for the band?

Releasing INEQUITY in April, touring and new material.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

Without using Google and remembering my extensive British comedy sitcom knowledge (Are you being served, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder etc)

Is it a roll?

Though there is an episode of are You being served where Mr Lucas gives Mr Grainger what’s called an “open sandwich”. And that’s only because someone nudged him in the queue and the top fell off.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you so much for the interest and the interview. Also thank you for making me remember such excellent British programming!
