France’s occult doom metal specialists Witchthroat Serpent conjure up six tracks of earth rumbling evilness with their newest release “Trove Of Oddities at the Devil’s Driveway”.

Album opener ‘Multi-dimensional Marvelous Throne’ not only serves as a great indication of the album’s direction, but at over ten minutes in length, perfectly captures the aesthetic of 70’s Hammer Horror, with its slow brooding nature. This is followed up by the equally ominous ‘Nosferatu’s Mastery’, and soundtrack-worthy  instrumental, offering ‘The Gorgon’.

The album continues with my highlight track. The combination of down-tempo riffs, hypnotic solos, and well delivered vocals easily makes ‘The House That Dripped Blood’ my favourite track of this release.

Not to be outdone, ‘Yellow Acres’ delivers a psychedelic swirl into this vault of terror, before the album concludes with the prominent basslines and occult soundscapes of ‘Mountain Temple In Bleakness’, which I thought closed of the album nicely.

The band comment:

“It achieves our initial dream of recording an album on analogue without using any computer or digital material. The album is on the whole slower than our previous ones. It’s darker and more evil, and a tribute to old horror movies, psychedelic drugs and lost souls. An invocation to Satan! We paid special attention to the atmosphere, making it threatening and anguishing while using a mellotron and movie samples for the first time. We wanted to keep the sound raw and natural, so Kerwax was really the perfect place to capture the haunted and psychedelic vibes of the songs. It’s our first album with this line-up and it took several years to develop.”

Horror-inspired droning fuzz.
