7/10
The band who was once asked to open for Metallica in the mid 80’s but upon learning they would have to pay their own expenses played their own protest show in the parking lot instead team up with the formidable and much missed Ian Frazer Kilmister for a newly curated 3 CD boxset “The Lemmy Sessions” which features the Motorhead Frontman mix of the bands album “Metal Anarchy”.
Now I nearly started this boxset off with the second disc in this particular set, which is a fully polished version of “Metal Anarchy” only as I was unfamiliar with it, but upon learning that the first disc in the set is the unreleased Lemmy mix (hence the name) and is the unedited original cassette version given to the band’s leader Evo to approve before release. This is also the album’s original running order. I felt starting with the second disc would be a disservice knowing how I feel about the cassette format and also for something as sacred as this. I had no option but to start there and even though I did and then moved on to the shiny new second disc version I couldn’t help but come back to the first version again & again, not to say the second wasn’t enjoyable, it was that the first was my personal preference for running order.
The final disc in the set, combines two ep’s “Two Tribes” and “Total Death”. I particularly enjoyed ‘Burning Up’ even though the start track and ending track remix of a Frankie Goes to Hollywood track was a joyous surprise.
As ever the expanded artwork and linear notes included are an always welcome addition as it gives a real insight and snapshot of the inner workings whilst also listening to some great music.
Nostalgia with bite.
