Ever Metal’s EMQs with Necronomicon Ex Mortis

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with USA based Death Metal band, Necronomicon Ex Mortis. Huge thanks to their guitarist, Manuel Barbará, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Manuel Barbará, I play guitar. The band started when Mike asked me if I had anything better to do than to fly to LA and record a death metal EP with him and I didn’t have a good answer.

How did you come up with the band name?

Mike really likes Evil Dead. I’ve only seen the first one and it was basically the strangest thing I’ve ever watched.

What country/region are you from and what is the metal/rock scene like there?

I grew up in Northern Virginia where the music scene is almost nonexistent unless you play bluegrass. I really only got into the music scene when I went to school in Boston.

What is your latest release?

We have a self-titled EP coming up at the end of the month.

Who have been your greatest influences?

I’m actually a prog/djent guy so I am hugely influenced by bands like Meshuggah, Monuments, and Tesseract. I studied contemporary “classical” composition in college so I draw a lot of influence from composers like Debussy, Bartok, and Schoenberg, which I think comes out in my solos. The main place where my influences intersect with Mike’s is in 80’s shred wizards like Tony MacAlpine and in our teacher, Matt Mills.

What first got you into music?

A dear friend got me into Pink Floyd and Iron Maiden in high school. From there I got obsessed with Dream Theater and it got real weird after that.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

I’d love to do something with Tony MacAlpine. He has such a unique blend of modern and old-school that I feel like I could do something interesting with him.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

New England Hardcore and Metal Festival. Mostly because I love Boston.

What is the weirdest gift you have received from a fan?

Well, Mike is a fan of my music and he gave me a bright pink t-shirt with green lettering at his wedding.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Buy stuff from bands – live is a mess right now and streaming pays us nothing.

If you could bring back one rock star from the dead, who would it be?

Alexi Leiho, we all miss him.

What do you enjoy most about being a musician and what do you hate?

I enjoy sharing ideas and making music with people. I hate how hard it is to get people to notice you, although I’m not convinced it’s any easier or harder than it was.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would make it so that musicians get paid to do stuff.

Name one of your all-time favorite albums?

Monuments – “In Stasis”.

What’s best, vinyl, cassettes, CDs, or downloads?

CDs if you have the storage space, downloads if not.

What is the best gig you have played to date?

Tesseract ensemble performance in college. It was the hardest set I have ever had to learn and I learned more than I ever have doing it.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I don’t really know, I have a lot of interests but most of them are questionably marketable at best.

Which 5 people would you invite to a dinner party?

I’d prefer to just have a bunch of my friends at a dinner party than anyone famous.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

Funny you should ask that, but some of the members of Necronomicon Ex Mortis have another project called The Apocalyptic Sandwich of Doom, stay tuned for our first release. Also, we kicked you out in 1776.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Rush was a Canadian Power Trio.
