EMQ’s With Radioactive Pineapple
EMQ’s With Radioactive Pineapple
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Finnish Pop-Punk band, Radioactive Pineapple. Huge thanks to their Bassist/ Vocalist, Jake, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Jake, bassist and vocalist since 2018. Ozzie and Thoubi founded this band in 2014 and various guitarists and bassists came and went until they decided to record our first EP by themselves in 2018. I joined the same year as a fill-in-bassist but eventually decided to stay. We recorded our first album “YES!” in 2020 but it saw delays due to the pandemic and some other things, so it wasn’t released until 2022. That same year Johnsson joined as the second guitarist so he’ll appear on our upcoming EP too.
How did you come up with your band name?
Ozzie tried to come up with the weirdest name possible (most of which included fruit or vegetables) and finally he and Thoubi settled with the current one which has been unchanged since.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We are from Helsinki, Finland, so you might have heard that metal music is kind of popular here (I think Finland has the biggest number of metal bands per 1000 people or some shit). However, as a punk rock band, me and my bandmates are probably not the best people to talk about that one. The punk rock scene is quite small here, I think, but the people in it are mostly very enthusiastic. Lots of DIY-happenings and so on, many people also record and produce their music by themselves.
What is your latest release?
We released our newest single, ‘Angry’, a couple of weeks ago, and in fact our new EP, “Insane”, will be out in only three days! So we are quite stoked about that which you might guess.
Who have been your greatest influences?
The California punk scene is pretty safe bet here, with both me and my band. Green Day, Blink-182, NOFX, Alkaline Trio and so on.
What first got you into music?
My parents encouraged me to play the guitar and I got into punk rock when I saw them watch some old Finnish punk rock DVDs in the early 00s. Then I saw Green Day in 2010 which opened a whole new world for me, since I hadn’t heard them, Blink 182 or Sum 41 before.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
I have answered Mark Hoppus too many times so I’ll go with Liam Gallagher this time. I’d see how Oasis I could go with the songwriting and therefore he would be the perfect choice for vocals there.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Ankkarock in Korso! And I really don’t know why. However, it’s no longer possible since the festival quit a decade ago or so.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Ticket price.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
We love you very much. As long as you come to the shows.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
I guess John Lennon, especially If Macca and Ringo promised to reunite The Beatles. It’d be weird without George Harrison but the deal was one so maybe that could just work.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
The best part is performing your songs live and seeing people sing along with them. The worst is probably when you have to take all your equipment back to your practice space after the show in the middle of the night. Still worth it though.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Maybe change the algorithms in the streaming services so that people should challenge themselves to discover music they actually like. Would it be different from the list-hits that the big record labels now produce? I don’t know, but I guess it’d still be worth a shot.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Dude Ranch” by Blink-182. It’s just the perfect pop-punk album.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I like vinyls but CDs are still the safest bet with the early 00s Volvos!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
I don’t know, maybe our show at Lepakkomies, Helsinki, last fall. The venue was full even though it was a Wednesday and I think we had a killer set list.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I’d be a historian because that’s what I am. Music doesn’t pay my bills, unfortunately.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
My girlfriend and my bandmates would be pissed if I didn’t invite them so there’s one vacant seat. Maybe I’d pick my old guitar-teacher Rane (who is a former Smack guitarist). I’d like to show him where I’ve gone with music.
What’s next for the band?
The EP, called “Insane”, will be out this Friday, June 16th! We’ll also be celebrating it with a show here in Itä-Helsinki and a killer afterparty! There will also be more shows and mini-tours this summer and fall, and maybe we’ll even go abroad!

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
Sorry, I don’t speak British. But football is always football, never soccer!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Go check us out on social media, and catch a show should you be nearby!
