EMQ’s With Leaden Fumes
EMQ’s With Leaden Fumes
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Swiss Post-Doom band, Leaden Fumes. Huge thanks to their Bassist and Vocalist, Chris, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Chris, bass and voice. The history of Leaden Fumes is shrouded in mystery (or should I say ‘leaden fumes’?) – though it can be said that both Flo and I wanted to continue playing together after the sudden split of Phased. Jonathan appeared and it was happy ever after.
How did you come up with your band name?
Another little mystery… but the name can be found in the title of a Phased album. Hint: it is the album with the longest title… I like to keep band-names running on a thread.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We hail from Basel, Switzerland. I do not know much about the metal scene, as I listen to free-jazz. I know Zatokrev since we shared the same practice room house, but am not sure they are so active anymore. We played with Soldat Hans recently who I found interesting. Also we are friends with Skullpriest…
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
“Kanashibari”, our second album with two digital singles and two videos (‘Car Thief’ and ‘The Eclectic Lizard’).
Who have been your greatest influences?
Black Flag, Throbbing Gristle, Hawkwind.
What first got you into music?
Punk Rock. After hearing the Ramones, I was sold. And being into punk meant you would also get into playing music.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
I already do collaborate with current musicians so… You can find some of those releases on Discogs!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Hellfest maybe? Or Freak Valley? Should be amazing…
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
An invitation to play a private concert for two in Barcelona, including our flights, hotel and money.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Do not underestimate the power of the dark force.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
No one. Let them rest in peace.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Losing my conscious self while playing and becoming one with the music vs the endless hours of waiting either in the studio or on the road.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I would stop all streaming services.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
The Stooges – “Fun House”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I buy my music on vinyl. Always have and always will. I do not understand the return of cassettes… Has everyone forgotten those tape-salads and that mangled sound?
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
There have been many, but with Leaden Fumes – supporting The Obsessed recently was a cool show, or maybe the show in Berlin with Gates Of Slumber and Lord Vicar. There was a real cool crowd there. Unfortunately, right after that the pandemic hit.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Painting – I used to paint and draw since early childhood, but gave that up to concentrate on music.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Five good friends.
What’s next for the band?
Shows, more shows… I really hope so.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
Holy shit, what a choice of weird words… OK, I say: a roll.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks for your interest in our music. Listen to Leaden Fumes and swarm to our shows.
