Hi everyone! Welcome to another EQMs interview, this time with French Heavy Metal Band, Meurtrières. Huge thanks to them for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
In the year 2018, MEURTRIERES was born from the unholy union of a sword and a cheap beer. Their aim is to bring back the sound of the Ancients in heavy-metal form, with riffs cast in stones, galloping rhythm and cry-out chants. Having tons of fun on top of that and you get the gist.
How did you come up with your band name?
MEURTRIÈRES has multiple meanings, like a lot of words in the French language. It means both “female murderers” and “arrow slits”. Olivier found it in a fever dream where a sucubus taunted him to use this name on her behalf. He’s not the type to like having problems with succubi so he obliged.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We reside in Lyon, France, capital of the heat wave as I’m typing this. The Heavy Metal scene is quite good around there. France is not a big country anyway so every like minded band dwelling in occitania, britany or else are part of this too.
What is your latest release?
We just put our last album called “Ronde De Nuit” out of the forge. It’s been out thanks to the great people of Gates Of Hell Records in any incarnation you could possibly have dreamed of : vinyl, CD, dematerialized media that you can crank in your sub-cortex via usb2 implement. It’s good, it’s REALLY good, you should test it.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Many ancients try to speak through our chants, like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate or the old french 80s scene like High Power, Sortilege and the like. But we humbly know that, as much as they try to speak through us , we only do our best with our numb fingers and crossed eyes.
What first got you into music?
Remember the succubus we talked about up there?
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
We don’t set ourselves goals like that in MEURTRIÈRES. We just go with the flow and if any opportunity that seems fun crosses our path, we jump on the occasion. For instance, we’re gonna have another tour with our friends DIONYSIAQUE because it’s just a natural thing to do. First one was a blast and just obvious so why not do another one?
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Same answer as above.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
A fan? Where?!!! Let us know!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Fun: Free beers
Unfun: Breaking strings
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Music Industry is about to change drastically since AI is on the brink of public assimilation. So I’m not taking any bets or wishful thinking about it. It will either die or be reborn in a monstrous way.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
MERCYFUL FATE – “Melissa” because it’s packed full of great riffs and King Diamond is a great storyteller.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
To each their own as long as music is available to everyone. Fuck elitism!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Many favorite ones among our ranks but what we can state is that we like it better when we play close to the audience in smaller places, even without a proper scene or anything. That’s where it’s at for us.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
We’re not professional musicians so I can tell you what I really am: a proud factory worker.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Depends on the menu. I can think of many if the dinner is shit.
What’s next for the band?
We’re gonna have multiple shows up and coming following the release of our new album so keep your eyes peeled. We want to play in your city!

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
