EMQ’s With Kite Thief
EMQ’s With Kite Thief
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK Alternative Rock/ Metal band, Kite Thief. Huge thanks to their guitarist, Josh, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Josh, guitar. We all went to a music uni together. One of our assessments was to get into groups and do a performance together. Elin (vocals) was ahead of the curve and she went and grabbed people she thought would do well with her. The rest is history!
How did you come up with your band name?
We don’t like to say much, other than Henry (bass) had a phase 👀.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
England/Wales is where we all came from but as a band, we come from Bristol. The scene in Bristol has a lot of history in many genres. And heavy music is no exception to that!
What is your latest release?
Our latest release is called ‘Goldsick’, a new single accompanying our other recent single: ‘The Tide’. There may even be more to come…
Who have been your greatest influences?
The list would be far too long! But we have all sorts of inspirations ranging from modern heavy bands like Bring Me and Spiritbox to pop artists and even old funk groups!
What first got you into music?
For myself, I started out very young with piano lessons and began to learn the guitar when I discovered Dire Straights and then very quickly Metallica.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Bring Me the Horizon I think! We caught their set at Download this year and it really solidified my opinion of them as the ones pushing this genre forwards at the moment.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
For me personally it would be Download, I’ve been a few times and it would mean a lot to play there. Otherwise I heard of one that happens in Iceland when there’s 24 hours of daylight, I love Iceland so that would be cool!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Gift wise we haven’t received much other than drinks etc, but one lovely gent did bring a kite to a show in Plymouth which was amazing. We ended up signing it and giving it back to him.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
We have been slow to release over the last few years so we really appreciate people sticking with us. There is a lot more to come and we are really getting going!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
For me personally, it would be Cliff Burton of Metallica. I would love to see what sort of stuff they could come up with together now. I’m sure the others would suggest others but that would be mine.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
The best thing for me is being on stage. That experience makes it worth all the effort and work we put in behind the scenes. I am not a massive fan of the actual recording/releasing side of things compared to the live side, I don’t hate it but it’s not my favourite part.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
As you might expect, I think streaming under pays but until recently, touring offered some form of help for artists but with Brexit, touring costs rising and now venues taking merch cuts, I really don’t see how bands are supposed to keep going.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Parkway Drive – “Horizons”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I am quite new to the vinyl space but my collection is growing. I really love the idea of buying my favourite albums in a physical format and the artwork looks great.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
We played 2000Trees this year and it was certainly the best! Huge shoutout to everyone who came and packed out the tent so early.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
I’m a huge motorsports fan so I would probably be trying to do something in the F1 industry.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Post Malone, Lewis Hamilton, Stormzy, Hayley Williams and someone funny, maybe like Jimmy Carr.
What’s next for the band?
We have some big plans to get more material out there, and play as much as we can across the UK.
What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
We are on most platforms, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook, mainly @kitethiefuk on all of them.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
Bap, unless it has chips or bacon or sausage and is buttered in which case it’s a bap. You might also catch me calling it a roll.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
These questions have been great, thank you for having me! I look forward to the response to my controversial bap/roll answer.
