EMQ’s With Hyperia

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Canadian Thrash Metal band, Hyperia. Huge thanks to their guitarist, Colin, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I’m Colin, and I play guitar in Hyperia. We’re a Melodic Thrash Metal band from Canada that has been around since late 2018. We are just gearing up to release our third full-length album “The Serpent’s Cycle” on November 17, 2023.

How did you come up with your band name?

It’s a made-up word between “Hyper” and “Hysteria” that we randomly came up with, we felt it fit our music pretty well and was a catchy name so it stuck.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We live in Vancouver, Canada. The scene here is really good, it’s super strong and supportive and there are constantly shows going on to check out. It died down from COVID for a bit but thankfully now many venues and bands are returning and it’s been pretty solid.

What is your latest release?

We’ve recently released 2 singles, ‘Automatic Thrash Machine’ and ‘Prophet of Deceit’.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Personally, I’d say bands like Havok, Exmortus, Stone, Children of Bodom.

What first got you into music?

Both my parents were musicians so I got into music pretty young. My dad would often play 70s rock in the house which I got into. I started piano lessons when I was young and then switched to guitar at 11 and it’s been all about that ever since.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I guess I’d have to say Wacken or Hellfest. Both are legendary festivals that consistently have amazing lineups and it would be huge to be a part of either of them.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Thanks for your continued support through listening to our music or buying merch! It means more than you know.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Alexi Laiho

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love that it makes you forget about any problems for a little while and that you could be having the worst day ever but as soon as you pick up your instrument or hit the stage none of that matters anymore. There’s not much I hate, but I’d say my least favourite part is dealing with all the non-musical aspects of being in a band like all the logistical parts of managing 5 adults.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Redistribution of wealth to the artists. The music industry wouldn’t exist without musicians and they are the ones who make the least amount of money.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

No Anaesthesia – Stone

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I’d say CD’s for me, I never really got into Vinyl or Cassettes but CDs sound much better than any digital streaming or downloads.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I’d say with either opening for Soulfly and Toxic Holocaust in 2020 or Hyperspace Festival 2023 opening for Exmortus, Paladin and more.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

My day job is doing Sound Design for Film and Series, so I suppose I’d continue doing that.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Mozart, Johnny Depp, Danny Elfman, Duncan Trussell, Alexi Laiho

What’s next for the band?

We will be releasing our new album “The Serpent’s Cycle” November 17 and are in the midst of planning some European tour dates for next year!

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

Oh man, I’m gonna guess a Roll?

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks so much to everyone who’s checked us out! We appreciate your support and hope to play a show near you someday soon!
