The Ukraine-based band Horyn, formed in 2014 have recently released their self-produced debut album, “Голоси моїх зневірених думок” in October 2023. What we have here are basically Atmospheric Black Metal songs that failed to show the listener what Horyn is really up to, considering the full scope of the album.

It seems like they ran out of money to hire a proper producer to set the relative sonority in the right place and provide to “Голоси моїх зневірених думок” a linear mastering for the songs. It sounds that the very first songs of the album focus on low drumming and riffs, outstanding the guitar and bass melodies and the peculiar Black Metal screaming vocal lines, along with melodies from keyboards. And on the second part of the album the songs were mixed with all the instruments at ‘right on your face’ mode.

Songs like the opening track, ‘То ми були’ doesn’t have neither the chaotic conduction from Second Wave of Black Metal nor the poor melody taken from the main instruments are able to give to the songs proper Atmospheric vibe. The first thing to notice are the Folk and Persian melodies here and there (I guess it is Persian, anyway, I’m from Brazil!), like on ‘Цивілізація’, but that doesn’t match with the guitar solo that is played shortly thereafter. So, during the 07:32 minutes long playback time for that song, it seems like I’ve heard three different and confusing songs all altogether.

Overall, I think that the band should keep their song writing style as they’ve delivered on the last three songs, when they find balance between the song’s passages and the right way to bring the chaos / ambience duality for the songs, turning their sonority really to what Atmospheric Black Metal is supposed to sound like.

Anyway, it is a good first album from a band that are still trying to find their musical signature for their songs that are a little messed up on “Голоси моїх зневірених думок” as a whole. Let’s wait and see what they deliver on the next album because Horyn have potential to come up with plenty of good stuff that requires better arrangements and production to actually nail their goal.
