Hi everyone, Gaz here again, bringing you my thoughts on a new Doom release, now that ‘Doom’ can cover a lot of sounds in music. When I picked up this album and saw the genre listed as ‘Doom’ I started to think, is this Doom in the veins of Ahab and Skepticism, or is it Doom like The Sword and Sleep? Turns out it is neither of these, this is DOOM! Warcoe have made an album in the traditional Doom style, the foundations of its sound were laid by bands like Pentagram, Witchfinder General and Pagan Altar. It’s thick sounding and groove driven, the band’s press pack used the term Gloom & Groove, which I think is the perfect description for this album.
‘A Place For Demons’ has this Gloom & Groove in spades, and really sets the tone for the rest of the album, the main riff hooks you in, the thick sounding guitars are satisfying to hear. Yes I said satisfying, there’s no thinness to them, like the tone is wrapped in cotton wool. ‘Pyramid Of Despair’ (What a great name for a song, I need to see this on a t-shirt with some killer artwork), has a great guitar solo, hearkens back to the no nonsense rock n roll of Motorhead. ‘Rune Dweller’ is a fast paced acoustic instrumental number that keeps the in with the darkness and Gloom of the rest of the album. this is until the opening riff of ‘Leaves’ comes in heavy and with the purpose of making your head move. Vocally, this is my favourite of the album, great vocal melodies accompanied by a lead line on the guitar, there are no weak songs on this album. Tracks like ‘Ishkur’ , ‘Boys Become Kings’ and ‘Wounds Too Deep To Heal’ deliver more of the same but equally different and just as enjoyable as everything else on the album, with the bass and drums working well together to make a solid rhythm section on this march into the darkness. Closing out the record is the 9 minute, ‘Buio’ (Italian word for Dark, if Google is correct), and dark is what this song is. A traditional slow heavy doom riff with thunderous drums and low growling Bass, another instrumental, no complicated riffs, just heavy music, something to close your eyes to and rock your head back and forth after a long long long day.
The Italian trio bring back the classic doom sound with this release and I am a big fan! I will be visiting their Bandcamp on BC Friday and picking up some merch for definite.
Now you have finished reading this, go have a listen to the singles, grab your denim jacket and give into the Gloom & Groove
