Straight up, I don’t like Doom Metal usually. My nickname is Zebedee because I’m bouncy and I can’t sit still, so Doom is just a bit slow and laboured for me. BUT… and this is a big but… when a band appears with anything to do with Christmas, I’m THERE! I FECKING LOVE CHRISTMAS!!! I love it so much that I think I’ll change my surname to Griswald! Anywho, Clouds Taste Satanic (great name) are an Instrumental Post-Doom band from New York, and they clearly like Christmas as much as me, so I’m willing to push my Doom aversion to the side to see what they can do to some Christmas classics.
The EP starts with a reworking of ‘All I want For Christmas is You’ and there’s not a Mariah Carey in sight (thank God! Don’t take her out of the freezer I say)! And it doesn’t really hint of the Doom edge that the rest of the EP has. It’s basically a slightly slower Classic Rock / Heavy Metal instrumental cover, but it’s still unmistakably the original song.
‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch’ is up next, and this is more Doomy, but still recognisable. This is followed by ‘Christmas With The Devil’. There’s some epic guitar noodling going on in this one, which takes it further from the original track, and turns it into something pretty decent as just a stand-alone track. But we do get nods to the original hooks, to keep it with the flavour of covers.
‘Little Drummer Boy’ Closes the EP, and you know what, I really like it! I thought I was going to despise it, because you don’t fuck with Bing and Bowie, right? But actually, it’s great. Low rumbling bass, crunchie, overdriven guitars, and the unmistakable ‘rum-pa-pum-pum’ on the snare. It’s kind of a display of how it feels inside my head on Christmas Day at about 4.30pm, when I’ve eaten my own body weight in turkey and pigs in blankets, and have been drinking a strange mix of alcoholic beverages since entering the kitchen at 9am to whack my bird in the oven, and stare at sprouts with disdain. So, still festive, but just a bit slow and chuggy!
In fact, this whole EP is the perfect soundtrack to that couple of hours on Christmas Day, when you’re in the void between meat sweats and getting your second wind (metaphorically speaking – physically, you’re already preparing for the epic wind that will shortly be exiting your body). So, to sum up. I don’t like Doom, but Christmas Doom is definitely on my nice list! Merry Christmas one and all!
