EMQs With GODETH
21/02/2024

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Groove Metal band Godeth. Huge thanks to Jimmy Johnstone, Godeth’s bassist, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

I’m Jimmy Johnstone, bassist from Godeth.

The band formed in 2018 after Dylan responded to a Facebook post from Danny about wanting to start a band. Luke then joined soon after. I then joined as bassist in 2022 and then Miles joined in March 2023.

After the restructuring of the band we have created a formidable sound and have gone on to play the likes of Bloodstock and are opening for some big names.

How did you come up with your band name?

There isn’t really a cool backstory with some deep meaning on this one unfortunately. The original idea was “Snowdeth” and then the first bassist recommended “Godeth” as a placeholder and since then it has stuck.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We’re all from Leeds UK, except Miles who is Knaresborough.

Leeds has some fantastic venues offering both upcoming bands and international touring artists a place to create a show. With the likes of Boom, Key Club, Brudenell Social Club, and plenty more, it is rife with plenty of emerging talent. We are very happy to be a part of it.

What is your latest release?

We have our next single coming out on 23/02/24 “Coup de Grâce” which is taken from our upcoming EP called “The Path of Destruction” which will be released 26/04/2024.

Who have been your greatest influences?

For me, personally, it has changed throughout the years but the main thing that I take influence from is Groove, from the likes of Pantera, Limp Bizkit, Alice in Chains through to Hardcore bands, like Incendiary, Biohazard and many more.

What first got you into music?

My Dad, he was the one that got me into the music mindset, he introduced me to bands like The Who, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Naturally the older I got the heavier my taste became in metal.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Khublai Khan, Matt Honeycutt. The guys a legend and has an unmatched presence.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Hellfest would be my top one, another country full of new fans playing with the best names. It is a dream of mine.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I wouldn’t say weirdest, because they’ve all been proper nice and heartfelt. So with that said, I’d go with a one of a kind Godeth Christmas bauble.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Come and have a laugh with us on this journey, we want you to be a part of it.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

So many, I’d have to go with Layne Stayley though. He was a one of a kind talent taken far too soon.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The escapism from normality and the mundanity of life. It gives me purpose and I can voice my emotions through music we create.

I wouldn’t say I hate anything about being a musician. Haha waiting around to play a show is the “worst” part of it.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

The music industry is a well oiled machine, I can’t pinpoint just one thing that I’d change.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Black Sabbath” – Black Sabbath. For all the reasons you can think of.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

For accessibility it would be Downloads, for aesthetics it would be Vinyl.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Bloodstock Open Air Festival 2023, was a game changer and has ultimately pushed us into a state of determination.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I’ve always appreciated photography, especially band photography. I’d love to pursue that into a career.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Robert De Niro, I bet he’s a mint cook.

Justin Hawkins, I think he’s ace.

Susan Boyle, she has a calming energy.

Morgan Freeman, for the stories.

And my partner, I’d get told off if I didn’t invite her.

What’s next for the band?

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

It’s a BUTTY.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks for having us, please be sure to join us on our Path of destruction. BIG LOVE!
