Formed in 2000 by two members of Tulus, Khold have been flying the flag for Norwegian black metal for over twenty years with a very straightforward approach to the genre which hasn’t changed all that much across multiple albums and very much continues on the band’s eighth album “Du dømmes til Død”.

Khold have a very simplistic and groove laden take on the Norwegian black metal sound with nods to black ‘n’ roll in their sound. Though unlike a lot of black ‘n’ roll, which has a more playful sound to it, Khold are pure malevolence and evil.  It is this straightforward no frills approach to black metal that has always caught my ear with Khold. Add in those killer riffs, and evil atmosphere and it is safe to say that Khold have won me over again with this album.  Songs such as ‘Myrdynk’, ‘Vanviddfaren’, ‘Skoggangsmann’ and ‘Trolldomsdømt’ are guaranteed to have your head nodding involuntarily whilst songs such as ‘Misgrep’ and ‘Galgeberg og Retterbakke’ will have the same effect but have a far darker and nastier feel to them.  The band are a tight unit with the groovy catchy riffs from both Gard and Rinn working well together with the pounding bass by Steinar and the simplistic yet methodical drumming from Sarke.  The album sounds absolutely fantastic as well having been recorded, mixed and mastered by the legendary Andy le Rocque who also lends some lead guitar to the intro of ‘Heks (du dømmes til død)’.

“Du dømmes til Død” is another example of Khold sticking true to their sound and doing what they do best.  It is very straightforward and mid-paced black metal which is by no means flashy but just delivers dirty riffs, filthy groove and undeniably catchy tunes.  When there are so many bands being overly technical for the sake of it, it is great to hear a band keeping it simple and damn effective.  A straightforward black metal attack that is guaranteed to have heads banging and stank faces pulled.
