EMQ’s With CaveKiller
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK Hardcore Crossover band, CaveKiller. Huge thanks to Vocalist, Oli, and Guitarist, Kuzz, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Oli -Vocalist & Kuzz – Guitarist
How did you come up with your band name?
Oli: All got together and thought, what name sounds great but hard at the same time…
Kuzz: Yeah that’s pretty much it, we were just trying to think of heavy sounding names and Cavekiller stuck.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
Oli: UK, Derbyshire – the scene here is ever growing and becoming bigger and better with ever yday that passes. Big props The Hairy Dog in Derby for supporting small/live bands and giving them the opportunity to play in their venue!
Kuzz: I’d also shout out the East Midlands Hardcore scene, which is where Cavekiller started out. Loads of sick bands, all around Notts, Leicester, etc, and it really helped us cut our teeth and find our sound.
What is your latest release?
Oli: Our latest single / Video is “Awake in the Nightmare” which is part of the “TOURMEN // DISMAY” EP which is due to release later this year.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Kuzz: There are so many bands that influence all 4 of us. Sammy (our drummer) and I grew up together listening to bands like Megadeth, Slipknot, Lamb of God, Machine Head, and even bands like Fall Out Boy.
Oli: For me personally – Electric Callboy, Slaughter to Prevail, Wage War, Polaris, Bury Tomorrow and Linkin Park
What first got you into music?
Kuzz: I remember being 8 or 9 years old, just starting to play guitar and seeing the music video for My Plague by Slipknot on Scuzz TV and being absolutely hooked.
Oli: From a young age I enjoyed music and had a classical upbringing through school, till one day I heard rock and that progressed to loving metal!
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Oli: For me it would be Electric Callboy as they are my absolute favourite.
Kuzz: I would say The Budos Band, they’re like an Afro Big Soul band but with a doomy, almost Sabbath edge. I feel we’d make an absolute banger together.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Oli: Rock am Ring, I followed it from when I was younger, my mother actually told me about it and watched it on TV. Plus I’m part German and would love to play over there.
Kuzz: I would have to say Download. Home turf, and it’s been a dream of mine for years. Also Tech Fest again.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Oli: Underwear, most likely used, can’t say I checked haha.
Kuzz: Yeah that beats anything I’ve ever got!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Oli: Be yourself, don’t try & be anyone else.. and when in the pit, party hard!!
Kuzz: Be kind, stay heavy, listen to as much music as possible.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Oli: Chester Bennington
Kuzz: Amy Winehouse
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Oli: I love the live show, seeing people going hard to your music and enjoying it. I hate the fact everything is so expensive and that it’s about money nowadays to get big.
Kuzz: Yeah I’d agree with Oli on this, nothing beats the feeling of hitting the stage. I’d say I’d dislike the fact that to be a musician these days, you have to be good at everything from video editing, social media, online presence, and not just making music. It is what it is, but it can be tough.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Oli: the whole genre generalisation and segregation, we all love alternative music so we should all love each other.
Kuzz: Not putting the music first, forget drama, and hype, it should be about the songs.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Oli: “Minutes to Midnight” – Linkin Park
Kuzz: “Weathered” by Creed
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?
Kuzz: I’m a sucker for some vinyl! I love having a nice physical representation of an album.
Oli: I guess downloads now as that’s what current, with everything on phones etc.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Oli: UK Tech-Fest 2023
Kuzz: Yeah Tech Fest is hard to top, but I’d say the most recent show we did at the Old Sal in Notts with Hounds and Surya. Great turn out and constant mosh pits.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Kuzz: I’d probably say something with coffee. Roasting or running a lil shop would be cool.
Oli: I’d basically do what I do now but focus even more on work and gaming.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Oli: Russel Howard, Alex the Terrible, Nico Sallach, Chester Bennington & Tatiana Shmayluk
Kuzz: Norm Macdonald, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Tommy Wiseau, JRR Tolkien, and Lars Ulrich.
What’s next for the band?
Oli: Release the remaining singles for the EP and get back to performing and also recording in the studio for more tunes!
Kuzz: Yep, get writing some even heavier tracks, and start causing some carnage in the pits.
What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Facebook, Instagram, (going to begin with TikTok) Twitter, Youtube, Spotify. Linktree is a great thing for putting all your links in one place.

Those are the best places to find us at the moment.,
Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?
Oli: It’s a Cob
Kuzz: Anything other than Cob is just factually wrong.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Kuzz: Not much else from us, but go and check out as many bands as you can, The Cartographer, Hounds, Surya, Those Once Loyal, Human Deceit, From her Ashes, and anyone else. Support your scene
