EMQs With Devilskin
EMQs With Devilskin
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with New Zealand Rockers, Devilskin. Huge thanks to their Bassist, Paul Martin, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Hi Paul Martin here, bassist and co-founder of NZ rock act DEVILSKIN. We formed in 2010. The band features my son Nic on drums, my sister-in-law Jennie on vocals and my evil twin Nail, (no relation) on guitar. Our first album charted at #1 on its release and quickly went gold then double platinum. We have just released our 5th offering an EP with six songs (two covers) on it.
How did you come up with your band name?
I got the idea from some of Jennie’s lyrics. How a person could be an angel one day and a devil the next. Depending on the skin they are wearing. We made the word our own.
What country are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
We are from New Zealand and the Metal scene here is bustling with great bands and talent but the venues and support systems aren’t so great for heavier music.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single or Video)
‘SURFACING’ is our latest release, it’s a 6 song EP. Previous releases include 3 studio albums and a live CD/DVD.
Who have been your greatest influences?
There’s so many. Personally for me, Sabbath, Bernie Torme, Stranglers, Led Zep, Motorhead, Zebra.
What first got you into music?
Hearing Louis Armstrong on the radio as a kid! I was immediately immersed!
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Rammstein! Because bombs and flames!!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Wacken Festival would certainly be a bucket list experience!!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
A bloody boar’s tusk.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thank you for believing in us. We believe in you.
If you could bring one Metal/Rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Randy Rhoads is probably my all time favourite guitarist.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Finding like minded people who are as passionate about music. Making music that is evocative. The downside is, the pay sucks.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Make it more accessible. More venues, more opportunities, more funding.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Handsome self-titled.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Vinyl!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Opening for Halestorm in Paris.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Riding motorbikes!
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Tony Iommi, Russell Brand, my wife Lisa, Bob Daisley, Lzzy Hale.
What’s next for the band?
Touring in support of our new EP. Back to Europe and hopefully the USA.
What Social Media/Website links do you use to get your music out to people?
Facebook and Instagram.
Jaffa Cakes? Are they a cake or a biscuit?
I’ve never had one, I heard it’s a cake. I need to investigate this!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
We are all extremely grateful to be in a position to be able to write, record and release songs that are very dear to us. To meet people who share this passion is the best bit 🙂
