Sometimes I love how I can turn my negative expectations into something positive, even though I always try hard to see the dark side of everything. The reason I’m saying this is the questionable way of thinking to pick up albums to review, something that is becoming funnier and weirder day by day. The ‘chosen’ band here is the Americans of Spread Thin and when I saw the magic words “Grindcore, “Hardcore” and “Debut” together in a same paragraph, I immediately thought that it could be the perfect blend for something quite annoying and bizarre, on the best meaning of this musical world, also on the worst meaning about quality!
To my surprise, just this positive one meaning went on my ears, but it’s even better than I would ever imagine. What an amazing band! Forget that creepy and dirty sound from Grindcore that can be annoying when used excessively. You can also forget about an immature band in their first years of existence, without knowing what to compose. Spread Thin is quite new, but these few years and the musicians background were more than enough to achieve an incredible album.
What we have here is a fast and short album which goes straight ahead to the point. Alex Dewall’s guitar riffs are amazing, and he offers a great versatility to not repeat himself. His job becomes easier having a powerful bass from Bryan W. Fleming to support who also shows a good vocal line, easy to be understood, even for my struggles of understanding English. He also keeps the aggressiveness all the time.
The drums of Tristan Wells are just one more piece that perfectly fits in this machine and here is the highlight. The synergy among them! The fast music navigates through the best of American Hardcore and it’s very well inspired by the Grindcore we know, like Extreme Noise Terror, but I believe they are more influenced by Hardcore bands with a heavy Grindcore addition than a pure Grindcore band as itself. The most important thing is how good and mature they are sounding.
“World Of Snakes” is like a precise and short shot from a gun with eighteen minutes full of intensity! Spread Thin look immense playing live, but with a very clear sound coming from them. I immediately imagined how insane it must be on stage, and I hope they soon return with more material!
