7/10
They say never judge a book by its cover and I know that it’s applied generally but if it taken literally as a huge bookworm the majority of purchases go against that very statement and if you apply that to album covers then I’m pretty sure that the latest offering from Hag entitled ‘Over stormskapte fjell’ isn’t going to filled full of positive affirmations and unicorn cuddles.
The five tracks that make up this release are surprisingly in stark contrast, there is almost a deliberate minimalistic approach but it’s somehow swept up in technicality and really evokes images of desolate, windswept mountain tops.
It’s hard hitting and entwined with atmospheric and hypnotic passages on tracks such as “Om vinteren banker tankene som hagl” which at nearly nine minutes really showcases the ability to not stick to a rigid formula and still manage a blistering delivery throughout. This track is then followed up with a short instrumental composition “Veien er lang”.
The album’s crowning glory comes in the form of title track “Over stormskapte fjell” which again boasts an impressive, lengthy track time to really pull the listener into the cold and bleak narrative.
The album concludes with the ten-minute grandeur of “En siste solnedgang over skogen” and really leans into the first wave of black metal with its snarling, razor sharp nature all wrapped around a cacophony of chaos
