Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Death Metallers Insurrection. Huge thanks guitarist Antonin Perras-Foisy for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Antonin Perras-Foisy, guitar player. The band formed over 20 years ago (2003) with the simple goals of playing music we enjoy, pushing ourselves musically and creatively, and sharing our love and enjoyment of Metal with as many people as possible.
How did you come up with your band name?
We needed a name that could be said in both French and English since we come from a bilingual place. Insurrection was perfect because it worked in both languages, it was metal, and it wasn’t too limiting in terms of what we could talk about in our lyrics.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
Gatineau/Ottawa. It used to be pretty great, the only thing lacking these past few years is the venues that are too few. The bands, fans and promoters here are awesome though. We just need more places that we can play, and people can come enjoy music.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We are releasing our new album “Obsolescence” on Friday the 13th of September via Bam & Co. Heavy.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Misery Index, Testament, Nevermore, Bloodbath, Decapitated.
What first got you into music?
Growing up, my father always had music playing. And he would listen to anything from Pearl Jam to Mozart to Eminem.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Dr Dre. I’d ask him to sample one of our riffs and to rap on it. Rap is my guilty pleasure.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Heavy Mtl, it used to be this big festival in Montreal. It hasn’t been around for a couple of years but it always had great line-ups and super fun ambiance all around. I just get so nostalgic when I think of it and I always told myself that I had to play there at least once.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
No weird gifts that I can think of. Once a fan got extremely mad at me when I didn’t have an extra cigarette to give them after a show. So I guess they gave me insults for not having enough smokes?
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
A big thank you for always being the best and supporting us throughout all those years.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
John Lennon and George Harrison. I am a diehard Beatles fan.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I really love the whole process of writing an album from scratch to have it in our hands. The feeling you get when playing a new song when you have worked on it for a while is awesome. Also leaving home to do a set of shows with the boys is great. Don’t really have anything to hate except bad toilets and no showers.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Musicians getting paid for streamings!
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Abbey Road”.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Gotta love putting on vinyl and listening to a whole album with no skipping in between songs!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
On my part, the first Trois-Rivières Metalfest was something else. It was my first big show with the band 10 years ago and I still remember the feeling of stress and adrenaline when we played the first song. This is a feeling I will never forget.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Probably working at the Post Office.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
Yo, Barm Cake sounds awesome. I will have it that way.
