Question. What would you get if you took Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park to an all-night rave in Hackney, and they got obliterated and created a love child? The answer is, of course, Seething Akira! British Metalcore, with a hefty dose of 90s Rave undertones is what they do. And this new album is a brilliant showcase of it.
It starts as it means to go on, with ‘Ixnay’ which is essentially a Dance chart banger that’s been injected with steroid level core, all delivered in a cockney guv’nor accent. Literally this is something that on paper sounds ludicrous, but in practice is simply about as perfect as something could get. It’s gritty and raw, with attitude, and the never-ending charm of the East End of Laaaaandon Taaaaaaan. (Half my family are from Eastham, Dagenham, and Hackney, and I can confirm that cheeky charm is their love language!)… The irony here is, they’re not even from London! They’re from Portsmouth!! But they are the embodiment of the charm that is so quintessentially and stereotypically the good side of the salt of the earth working-class Brit.
Anyway, back to the music! The album continues with banger after banger, dropping ten tracks that are musically clever, lyrically superb, and sonically satisfying. The elements of EDM are always present. But the use of low and heavy guitars, and rumbling bass coupled with pounding drums make this an album that’s going to appeal to a huge range of people, melding together two worlds that couldn’t be further opposite if they tried!
These Southern sonic nutcases have also mastered the art of the mimic, throwing in tracks that branch off into perfect Emo, and 90s Pop-Punk, before smacking you in the kisser with either a Rave drop, a Rap passage, or some gritty Hardcore. And they do love a sample!
I fucking love this. It’s insane, but it connects so many dots together like one big musical soup. It’s the embodiment of the phrase “Why can’t we all just get along, because life’s too short, so we might as well just have fun and be nice to each other”. Even the album name, “Cancel Estate”, is a clever play on words using the pronunciation from that part of our little island. This is going to be on my playlist for a very long time.
