EMQ’s With Loss

Hi Everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Brazilian Stoner Rock/ Hard Rock band, Loss. Huge thanks to their Bassist/ Vocalist, Marcelo Loss for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Marcelo, I’m the bassist and vocalist of Loss. In fact, the band can be considered a natural continuation of the musical careers of its members, all musicians with a lot of experience in the Brazilian underground.

How did you come up with your band name?

Loss is my surname but that doesn’t mean it’s a personal project, we work as a band, everyone makes decisions and defines the band’s actions.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal/ Rock scene like there?

We are from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the same city where bands like Seputura, Sarcófago and many others came from. Since the 80s the city has had a very strong heavy metal scene.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We released our second full-length last month. It’s called Human Factor and we’re doing some launch shows around the country.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Our most direct influences are classics like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rush, Van Halen, but we try to absorb very diverse influences, including regional Brazilian music.

What first got you into music?

I started playing acoustic guitar when I was very young, around 6 years old, influenced by my father. Then it was just a small step to turn to the electric guitar and bass and fall in love with rock and metal!

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

I had the opportunity to play with Vinny Appice, the Black Sabbath drummer, when he recorded the drums for an EP from my previous band. We also did some live shows in Brazil. It would be amazing to work with him again or to have the opportunity to play with another member of Black Sabbath.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Playing at Wacken would be a dream come true, without a doubt!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I think it was a very sweaty and dirty shirt that a fan wanted to exchange with mine. I must say that mine, after an intense show, was not in a very good condition either! 🙂

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Just live your life without caring about other people’s opinions. Do your best and try to do the right thing, the rest is a consequence.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Freddie Mercury!!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The best part of being a musician is being able to express your own art, what you carry inside you. The stage, in particular, is a very special place. The hard part is often not getting the recognition you deserve and having to prove your worth every second.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I don’t usually complain about the music industry or wish things would go back to the way they were because things move on and we need to adapt. As a listener, I’m a fan of streaming and the ease of accessing the music you want, whenever you want, but I think we need to find a balance so that artists are better compensated.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Heaven and Hell” – Black Sabbath

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

A. As I said, the benefits of digital music are obvious, but I still enjoy the sound of vinyl and the ritual involved in listening to it.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

There have been many great shows over the years, but with Loss I would highlight a performance in Madrid – Spain on our first European tour in 2022 and one we did a few months ago in Macapá, a Brazilian city in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. They put on an incredible event for over 50,000 people!

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I don’t know. Maybe a producer…

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

My two bandmates, of course, and a few other crazy people willing to talk about music and drink a few beers.

What’s next for the band?

Our focus now is the new album. We want it to reach as many people as possible, whether through distribution on social media or through shows.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or BarmCake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake

We don’t know much about English sandwiches, but Brazilian ones are the best! 🙂

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you very much for your support and follow us on our social networks to find out about Loss news.
