“Tamás Kátai has a vision that extends beyond borders and boundaries”. Well, that’s one way of putting it, or a complete understatement. I’d say that the Hungarian musician has well and truly torn up the rule book for composition and gone his own unique way, fiercely defying anybody that opposes him! Honestly, the 12th studio album (“XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek”) for Thy Catafalque is not one you’re going to forget easily.

See, when some musicians try to mix multiple styles, it can be a raging success. Remember when Nightwish introduced soprano style vocals to Symphonic Metal? Or when Igorrr took this one step further by combining operatic vocals, Death Metal and Electronic Dance Music? Whilst there are some overly ambitious misses, these certainly were hits, and I get the same exact vibe from Thy Catafalque.

Everything you’d expect from Extreme Metal is present here; bone crunching distorted guitars, soaring leads, and earth shattering drums (perhaps most prominent in ‘Mindenevo’). . The production brings out the very best of each too, placing them elegantly in the mix. Though it’s the Folk elements and ambience we hear throughout that I find most intriguing. Especially during the early stages of the album, or ‘Lydiahoz’ with the elegant introduction of traditional Folk string and other instruments to add a distinct Eastern European flavour. It feels as though we’re getting a lesson in this particular culture whilst simultaneously having our faces melted by some Extreme Metal!

Kátai isn’t afraid to add more modern and contemporary elements too. Try listening to the electronic dance frenzy that is ‘Vakond’ and not wanting to burst out into dance. You’ll find it hard!

Vocally, there’s a variety of vocal textures to get your teeth stuck into it. Tamás sings so passionately in his native tongue, and is supported admirably well by the ethereal and soothing backing vocalists, adding that aforementioned . Yet he can switch things up effortlessly and unleash the most demonic growls!

I could go on, but if you’re a progressive music fan looking for something different to challenge yourself, Thy Catafalque are for you!
