Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with USA Hardcore/Metal band, HEARTSICK. Huge thanks to Vocalist, Alfonso Civile, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
Heartsick. The band started about 10 years ago after the sudden passing of the former drummer in our old band, which was named Know Lyfe.
How did you come up with your band name?
We made a list of names we thought were cool and the name Heartsick showed up on each of our lists, and it just made sense as we were still grieving the passing of our drummer Matt.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We are from Michigan U.S.A. The scene here in Michigan is very much thriving. Midwest folks here love heavy music so we have a very good support system and a lot of bands from our state end up doing bigger things if that tells you anything
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
Our latest EP is called “Covered” and it is a collection of obscure covers we did of bands we love with one new song.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Deftones, Poison The Well, System of A Down, Every time I Die, Nine Inch Nails all come to mind.
What first got you into music?
Ever since I was a kid I just felt this closeness to it. As I got older it grew. I always knew I would be in some form of singing role.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Sleep Token or Deftones hands down!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Download fest because that is THE festival. If you play that, you can say you made it in some way.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
I think the weirdest gift we ever got as a band was probably a small little statue of a meerkat lol.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Keep going. Failure is a sign of growth and learning. Don’t stop because you fail at something.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Would probably be Darrel Abbott….we were robbed of him way too soon.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
I love that we get to travel, meet new people in new places, make new friends and just get to see what so many different places have to offer all while showcasing our art. I do not particularly enjoy fast food.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
The amount of shady and shifty characters who gate keep and/or just take your money without doing much of anything.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
Deftones “Around the Fur”. Doesn’t get better than that classic for me!
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
Ohhhhh that is tough! I would say Vinyl sounds the best but streaming is just so easy to have access to. Streaming music sounds like shit compared to vinyl though lol.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Would have to say the best gig we have played to date was Louder Than Life 2022. That was insane!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Likely would be a medical doctor lol.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
My son, My wife, My mom, My Sister, My father. Only people in the world I can not be without.
What’s next for the band?
We are currently in the studio recording some new music with Josh Schroeder and gearing up for a 16 day run in January with Nonpoint and Crobot.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?
I should know this as I lived in Germany….lol…..Roll?
