EMQ’s With LESS THAN HOLLOW
EMQ’s With LESS THAN HOLLOW
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK Alt-Rockers, Less Than Hollow. Huge thanks to their Vocalist/ Guitarist, Adam, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Adam, I am the guitarist and singer of Less Than Hollow, an Alternative Rock band from london; UK. We have been going since 2021 and have been writing and releasing singles steadily since summer 2021, coupled with shows and tours supporting acts such as Florence black, Ryan McCombs ( SOiL/Drowning Pool), Nike oliveri (Qotsa), Eyes Set To Kill, and most recently an EU tour with Lansdowne.
How did you come up with your band name?
I wrote the music for Less Than Hollow without a name to begin with, and thematically it all came from a dark place, dealing with bullying, abuse, relationships, loss and betrayal. These subjects were very real and easy for me to write about, and they often left me feeling lower than low, number than numb, and I guess it’s a bit of an oxymoron but that’s where less than hollow came from.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
Less Than Hollow are based in London in the UK, which has a solid Metal and Hardcore scene, however we are a little bit more on the Alternative Rock side of things, favouring that American sound, which makes us stick out a bit more.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We have just released a single, ‘At The Bottom’, which came out during our UK leg of the EU tour with Lansdowne, (USA), it’s a fiery track about moving on from negative cycles and choices in life.
Who have been your greatest influences?
I wouldn’t be playing guitar or singing if it were not for Bon jovi, Metallica and Iron Maiden, however these days my influences can vary from the Black Dahlia Murder to Kesha to John Mayer.
As a band, we take influence from 2000’s Rock bands like Three Days Grace, Seether, Chevelle, and even
Nu Metal acts like Korn and Staind.
What first got you into music?
As I previously mentioned, I would definitely not be playing music at all had I not heard Bon Jovi. My dad loved bands like Bon Jovi, Black Sabbath and Yes. The melodies that Jon sang and the guitar solos Ritchie Sambora played so effortlessly made me want to be in a band.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Well since the new Linkin Park album came out, I have been patiently waiting for Mike and Emily to call me regarding a guest spot, let’s keep hoping haha.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
I have heard many great things about Graspop in Belgium, so I would love to play there, but my absolute dream would be to play America, so something like Welcome to Rockville or Inkarceration Festival.
And of course Download Festival!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Well I got taken out for dinner as a thank you for playing in Prague, which was totally unexpected but very kind, especially as I had never played there before.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Make sure that no matter what, you do what YOU want to do it your life, don’t let anyone (including
your own doubt) stop you from trying to make your life how you want it to be.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Oli Herbert from All That Remains, he was my favourite lead guitarist in metal and he died far too young.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate? Ok, so, bad first:
Touring is really hard, i’m 37 so i’m kind of old to the game now, and I love basic comforts like showering and a comfy bed etc, however I have loved meeting loads of new people on tour and at shows, I live writing music and performing onstage, performing gives me the confidence to be myself and it’s very cathartic sometimes getting the emotions out at a show.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
I think I would just keep doing what I am doing, it is a hard industry and there are sharks in the water, but nothing worth doing was ever easy.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
I have two answers here, the Metal album answer is:
“End of Heartache” by Killswitch Engage; it has amazing riffs , huge chorus melodies and the production is perfect.
But I also love “Continuum” by John Mayer; it is filled with amazing melodies, clever lyrics about love and life lessons, and of course some beautiful guitar playing.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?
I am lazy so I just stream everything, that’s terrible right? By the way, stream Less Than Hollow please…
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
In Less Than Hollow I supported Florence Black in their home town and it was just so much fun, however I also played with Sleep Token in my previous band at Camden Rocks festival, which I am very proud to say.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
So I used to work in libraries, then I started teaching guitar and ukulele which is my main job outside of the band. I’m also an avid warhammer player and collector so I would potentially work in that industry in some way.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain, James Hetfield, head from Korn, and John Mayer, I would just love to hear all their stories, tricks of the trade and advice.
What’s next for the band?
We have just released our first single from our self-titled mini album, so the plan is to steadily release singles next year and then release the album in the summer, perhaps followed by another support tour in Europe and the UK if we can get that organised.

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!
Wow…that’s actually something I have never thought about, but considering it’s in the name and
has a more cake-like texture, I am going to lean towards it being a cake.
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you for the questions, it’s been a lot of fun to answer! Check out Less Than Hollow on all
streaming platforms and feel free to add us up on Instagram and Facebook!
