When I think back to my Swiss summers as a child, on the shores of Lac Leman, in a sleep village just outside Nyon, I’m reminded of the idyllic peacefulness I felt, that I’ve never yet found anywhere else. Sun-drenched cornfields, the gentle and constant rhythm of cowbells, and chirruping crickets filling the warm air, and long summer nights marvelling at the stars, unshrouded by less light pollution than I was used to. That was back in the halcyon days of the Walkman and mix tapes, and my teenage soundtrack at that time was an eclectic mix, with the likes of Cradle Of Filth nestled next to Boyz 2 Men. But, had Swiss Psych Rockers, Peacebone, been around back then, they would absolutely have made my mix tapes.
“Blame The Bird” is the latest offering from the 5-piece, featuring a neatly packaged 15 minutes of serene Psych Rock, with a hint of melancholy, mainly from the lyrics. I can almost feel my entire being relax when listening to the soft and gentle tones of the rhythm section here. And the floating, dreamlike vocals of Rebekah Atkinson add to this tender hug perfectly. They remind me of a cross between London Grammar’s Hannah Reid, and Portishead’s Beth Gibbons. Soft consonants, and long emphasised vowel sounds take the lead, and are backed up masterfully by gentle percussion, and understated guitar.
The only thing touched by overdrive in this is the lead guitar of Samuel Lucchini, which wouldn’t have been out of place on any Indie record from the late 90s. But again, it’s understated, and lets the complete sound do the talking. As my dear mum used to say, ‘If they were any more laid back, they’d be horizontal!’ And that really is the feeling you get from this sound. It’s the musical equivalent of soaking up the Sunday Morning rays on a veranda, in your dressing gown, with an iced Latte and a croissant.
If you need 15 minutes of dream-like escapism then this is absolutely the band, and EP, for you.
