Sweden and Wales might have a bit of distance between them, but they do have at least 2 things in common. One is the spectacular, rugged countryside, and the other is that seemingly everyone can sing, and write a tune! Greybeards are yet another Swedish export that know their way around a Rock song, and their new EP serves as a neat little glance into what they do.

It’s a mellow and easy to listen to record, that’s understated and unassuming, but endearing. Musically, it’s Classic Rock, with hints of The Foos, and a smattering of Southern feels, and some 90s Indie. I think it must be my age, but I’m really enjoying the 90s sound revival at the moment. Some would argue it was the decade that killed Classic Rock and Metal. But for me it was my formative years, and when I revisit the music of my generation now, with a hell of a lot more life experience than I had then, it all makes even more sense. A lot of the musicians reviving that sound tend to be the older end of the spectrum, like me. But Greybeards are only relative youngsters, which makes their sound more organic, rather than recycled, which is great.

Vocalist Olle Westlund has a vocal that’s both delicate, and vulnerable, but gravelly in the sections that need it. It’s kind of like ‘Maggie May’ era Rod Stewart meets Dave Grohl, which does float my boat. Musically, the rest of the band have a great balanced tone, moving between overdriven riffs, and more stripped back sections with ease. It’s everything you’d want to see in a good quality Rock band. My only criticism is it feels very ‘safe’ and, dare I say, a bit samey. And in what is currently a very saturated market, I worry it won’t really stand out because of this.

Is this a groundbreaking EP that will change your life? No. But it is a nice EP that doesn’t require too much mental strength to listen to. And let’s face it, we all need a bit of easy listening at times. Give it a go.
