EMQ’s With ABOLISHMENT OF FLESH

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with USA Brutal Death Metal band, Abolishment Of Flesh. Huge thanks to their Guitaist/ Vocalist, and founder member, Ramon Cazares, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Ramon Cazares and I am the guitarist and vocalist for Abolishment of Flesh. I put the band together back in 2006 in the Amarillo, Texas area. We pretty much hit the ground with our feet already running. We were doing tons of local shows, and it didn’t take long for our name to spread enough to get out-of-town show and festival offers. We’ve always incorporated a lot of melody and some technical stuff. Back then it was fast, raw, and very chaotic and I love that even today. But now I feel our music still has those attributes, but it’s structured and arranged a lot better than our old stuff.

How did you come up with your band name?

Originally, we were just Abolishment, but a couple of years after, I decided to add “Of Flesh”. To me, it adds more substance to the meaning and kind of creates a theme for the band, and the content in the lyrics. Basically, I believe we are flesh, but we also have a spirit inside. The flesh is what causes us to do evil and our pure spirit is always struggling with the flesh. The second meaning is the complete and brutal annihilation of mankind. I lean more toward the latter.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from Texas, USA. Texas has a strong underground metal scene. We have a lot of great bands that have come out of Texas. And on top of that, we have a ton of up-and-coming underground metal bands!

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

‘Resurrecting Misanthropy’ is the EP we just recently released on Blood Blast Distribution. We have a lyric video and music videos for those songs. Can’t wait for everyone to check them out.

Who have been your greatest influences?

I have a ton of influences, but the main ones that influenced me to do what I do would be bands like DEATH, Suffocation, Sepultura, Napalm Death, and  Deicide.

What first got you into music?

I’ve always loved listening to music since I was a child. If I had to give credit to my musical interest, it would be because of my parents. Music was always playing in our house while growing up. I’ve always loved seeing the instruments being played. I think when I saw the videos for ‘Paradise City’ by Guns n Roses and ‘One’ from Metallica, I made up my mind that I wanted to be a musician and play live.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Well, this person is no longer around but I would have loved to work with Chuck Schuldiner. He is a huge influence on me.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

That would be the Wacken Open Air! That’s like the biggest and loudest Metal fest on the planet!

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I can’t think of anything too weird but there’s been a few times couples would come up to our table and the dude would be like “Hey, we loved your band, wanna see my girl’s boobs?” So that was interesting! Kind of a gift, lol!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Check out our stuff! Listen to our music, and come out to see us out on the road… And buy merch!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Probably Ronnie James Dio. It would be really cool to see him perform!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I enjoy creating music and people discovering my music. Performing live is also exciting to experience. I hate the drama in local scenes. But I mostly hate musicians and promoters who rip people and bands off.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

People need to learn how to discover and buy music again. I remember going to record stores to look for new music, and being excited to go home and unwrap and spin a new album. Those days are over! Now, everything is easily accessible. There’s no mystery or magic. So, I hope people check out the few record stores remaining and experience discovering new music.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“DEATH-HUMAN”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I miss vinyl, 8 tracks, cassettes, and CDs! Today’s kids will never understand going to a record store for a new release. Or a midnight album release event at a record store. I think this question should really be about physical vs downloads. Anything physical is better than downloads, period.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The Hell and Heaven Metal Fest in Mexico City was the best experience we’ve had. We definitely had the rockstar treatment that weekend.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Well, I work in maintenance and construction so I’m pretty much already doing that. The dream is to live off music, but not going to lie, I’m content coming home from a tour and having to go back to work.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

It would definitely be my wife and myself, my guitarist Izaak and his wife Bekah, and a friend of ours Roderick McDaniel who is a comedian out of Austin, Texas.

What’s next for the band?

We are in the middle of working on our new release. We wanna release a new album and tour to promote it for 2025. Lots of promotion.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?

Hmm, not sure about this one. Americans’ perception of the people in the UK is, we think y’all are sitting around all day sipping on tea. So let’s go for Tea Cake.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for having me! Yeah, check us out on social media, like us, follow us, and share us! If we’re coming to your town, come on out and say hi to us!
