EMQs with WITHIN DESTRUCTION
EMQs with WITHIN DESTRUCTION
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Slovenian Metalcore band, Within Destruction. Huge thanks to their scream Vocalist, Rok, for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
My name is Rok and I do scream vocals. The band was formed in 2010 by our drummer Luka and me. As a band coming from a small European country, it was extremely hard to break through into the scene. It took 6 years of hard work and the release of our 2nd full-length, “Void”, to finally gain international recognition and touring opportunities. In 2018 we’ve released our 3rd album, “Deathwish”, which received overwhelming feedback and opened new career doors. The band went through several line-up changes until 2019-2020 when we met Howard, who was the final missing puzzle piece to our trio. Between 2020 and 2023, we’ve released 3 more albums, “Yokai“, “Lotus“ and “Rebirth“. After working predominantly as an independent artist, we’ve decided to team up with Sumerian Records in 2025 for the release of our 7th title, “Animetal“, to help us elevate our vision to even higher levels.
How did you come up with your band name?
Our drummer and I were jamming As I Lay Dying songs all the time. They were the focal point of our music interest, so when we eventually formed the band, we decided to name it after one of their songs “Within Destruction”.
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We come from Slovenia. The Metal/ Rock scene is very small but relatively dense. We have a population of cca. 2 million and based on online statistics we have about 300 metal bands. I would say Thrash, Death and Black Metal are the most popular genres. Unfortunately, I’m not that tuned into the Rock scene so I can’t say much about that part.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
We are releasing a brand-new album this year, it’s called “Animetal”. Our latest single is called “Cyber Girl” which also has a music video.
Who have been your greatest influences?
Speaking for myself, there were a handful of people who I looked up to, just a few off the top of my head: Mitch Lucker (Suicide Silence), Phil Bozeman (Whitechapel), Florent Salfati (Landmvrks), Ryo Kinoshita (Knosis), Chester Bennington (Linkin Park).
What first got you into music?
I accidentally opened a folder on my father’s computer which contained Metallica records and I clicked on ‘Enter Sandman’. I remember how much of an impact that song left on me and it got me interested in learning to play it myself.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Ado, Babymetal or LiSA.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
I’m not partial to any festival. I think all festivals are extremely fun and I’d be happy to play on any of them.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Worn earrings.
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Enjoy music for what it is, if it sounds good to you then that’s all that matters, don’t limit yourself by genres or opinions.
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Chester Bennington.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
What I enjoy: The energy exchange with the crowd at a good live show and positive affirmation from fans and peers.
What I hate: Basically, most of everything else, haha.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Make the music be the core of the industry. Nowadays it feels like no matter how good your songs are, if you don’t make 15s clips of yourself pretending to be a “clown” while your song is playing in the background and post that on TikTok every other minute, you’re not going to be relevant and most likely won’t go far.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
I don’t have one. I’m really weird when it comes to music consumption. I almost never listen to albums in their entirety. I hyper obsess on a few select songs and listen to them over and over, haha.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?
Personally, I prefer downloads, I like the convenience. From an artist’s perspective, it’s the other way around since physical copy sales put the most amount of money in our pockets.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
I can’t really think of one that stands out as “the best” but the most memorable is a festival we played in the Philippines. Due to visa issues, our guitarist was unfortunately unable to play that show so we had to improvise and perform only with live drums & vocals while having guitars on laptop backing tracks. Due to the summer heat, we were unsure if the laptop would survive the set duration without overheating and shutting down. Luckily everything worked out and we managed to somehow pull it off.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Video editing, digital art, content creation, streaming or something in that lane.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
My close circle of friends. I’m an introvert and feel anxious when surrounded by people I don’t know very well, so I wouldn’t feel comfortable around strangers, even if they were people who I admire.
What’s next for the band?
Right now we’re focused on releasing our new album “Animetal” so all our attention is aimed towards that.

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!
I’d say it’s a really good biscuit, or a very disappointing cake!
Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Thank you, nothing special to add on our end.
