The world of Alternative Rock and Metal is something that I really connect to, because it brushes with the mainstream quite a lot, but drifts off and does its own thing, very much like me! Decrepit Youths are a bunch of heavy Alt Rockers from Newcastle UK, and listening to their new EP, “Love Psycho Kill Machine,” lets me know that dabbling with the crossover from the mainstream is definitely what they like to do.
The title track opens the EP, and sets the tone of what the band are about. Starting out with mainstream style, almost dance beats, we get a mix of heavy guitars, synth melodies, and spoken word verses, with a gritty rap edge. The bridge has a really catchy melody, and then the chorus launches into more aggressive vocals, with the instrumentation having a kind of Rammstein crossed with Muse feel to it.
Their newest single, ‘Black Dove’ is next. Bring Me the Horizon, and Royal Blood are listed as two of the band’s influences, and that’s what I can hear in this track, along with the likes of 30 Seconds To Mars. It’s got a great Modern Metal track, with a mainstream hook, and beat that marries the world of chart Dance music with Heavy Rock. Vocally, I love the style in here, and in the other tracks, it’s crystal clear but with a gravelly quality that really gives it some punch.
‘Monster In Me’ is a powerful track that ebbs and flows, using dynamic changes brilliantly. It’s a split personality track, with gentle melodic sections, and then twisted psychotic Heavy Rock sections that include more screamo vocals, distortion, close harmonies, and unusual cadences.
And that’s it. That’s all we’re getting on this EP. 3 very short tracks, bringing the total play time to just over 9 minutes! And that’s one of my only gripes here. I love the music, but there’s just not enough of it! Can we have a bit more next time please?
