Eons of Decay is a side project forged by some of France’s great musicians, full of inspired songwriting, that leads the musical conduction to cross the limits of any musical style, and gives the band free rein to flirt with lots of sonorities during this debut album “Tome 1 Ultima Pangea”.

The first songs, ‘Prologue’ and ‘Digital Agora’ set the band’s musical proposal and both follow the same pace – intricate and abundant, moving from Black Metal with austere vocals and tasteful blast beats, allowing themselves to be permeated by other sonorities such as Epic passages and guitar solos that are astonishing. And there’s something else with the guitar solos that reminds me of The Maestro Yngwuie Malmsteen, and Conrado Pesinato (Graham Bonnet’s Project) bringing the shredder to their contemporary sound.

The next songs, such as ‘Ultima Pangea’ and ‘The Perfect Storm’ hit the nail on the head with what is conceived as an Avant-Garde Black Metal song; those songs are so beautiful, that instead of being described in words, I compared them to an epic painting, full of landscapes and nebulous spaces for our mind to find the relationship between the painting and the underlying narrative. I must mention that, according to the press release, ‘Tome 1 Ultima Pangea’ is the first album of a concept trilogy which “(…) tells a story, to offer more than just an album. The theme oscillates between criticism of today’s society and human nature, more specifically its tendency to self-destruct and repeat its mistakes over and over again.”

In song 4 or 5 there is a flirtation with more genres. There are musical passages that open room for Progressive punctuations everywhere, and Blackened Death Metal appears in yet another of the dozens of bridges on songs like ‘Organic Fert’, where the arrangements and production are based on a respectable mix, highlighting certain passages in the songs. This kind of feels like the album is taking two steps behind the in-your-face production of similar releases.

“Tome 1 Ultima Pangea” is an album that relates to what I would call ‘state of art’, forcing me to rate it with a perfect 10 score! Because Eons of Decay play such incredible songs, that reach beyond my wisdom, making it difficult to conceive a complete review in words of what is heard on the album. I’m already looking forward to the next two albums of the trilogy mentioned by Eons of Decay.
