EMQ’s With SICKRECY

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Swedish Grindcore band, Sickrecy. Huge thanks to their drummer and founding member, Martin, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Martin and I’m the drummer and main motor in Sickrecy.

I started this in 2020 but it wasn’t until late 2022 that we had a full lineup. It was originally meant to be just a side project but things evolved and we got a couple of offers to do some cool shows and decided to complete the lineup and take it to the stage.

How did you come up with your band name?

It’s a combination of sick – secrecy, sick – hypocrisy, sick – whatever ends with crisy. The name just came to me after watching some documentaries about government red tape, government secrecy.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are spread across southern Sweden and I would say that it’s a pretty good scene. It’s a lot of Punk, Crust, and Hardcore, as well as Metal bands. At least I can’t keep track of everything happening and I don’t have the time nor the money to attend every show.

What is your latest release?

On Friday June 6 our latest single and video will go live on streaming sites but the vinyl can be bought on our Bandcamp site already. It’s a split 7 inch vinyl together with the Austrian grind machine Distaste. It’s the first of three split 7inches to be released this year.

Who have been your greatest influences?

It’s not so much a question of who even though bands like Napalm Death and Terrorizer play a significant role in our sound. I would say that it’s the whole late 80’s early 90’s era of Extreme music that has shaped us, and we have used that to form our sound.

What first got you into music?

I think that it was Kiss, but I remember when  I was around 8 or 9 and I bought my first record, The Exploited – “Troops of Tomorrow”, and my second, Iron Maiden – “Killers”. Just by looking at those covers, I knew that I had to be in a band, and by embracing the music on those records, I knew that what I was learning in music class wasn’t what I was cut out to do. I wanted to play fast like ‘UK 82’ by Exploited or ‘Fast as a Shark’ by Accept.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

That depends on what type of collaboration it would be, but Carcass would definitely be a really cool and suitable collaboration partner to us. I’ve always admired Bill Steers’ tone and kind of smooth style of playing the guitar. Jeff’s vocals are insanely good and would go nicely along with our music. Yeah, I would definitely say Carcass.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I would love to play the Roskilde festival or the Reading festival just because they are those old school types of festivals where all genres meet and you get exposed to a lot of music that you normally wouldn’t get to hear. I’ve seen so many cool bands and artists do amazing shows on the Roskilde festival, bands like Jamiroqai before they blew up and become huge in the 90’s, House of pain, Suede, Entombed, Bodycount, Sick of it all, they all did great and remarkable shows.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Don’t think that we have received any weird stuff with Sickrecy but I remember in the early 90’s when I was a contact person for a band and I received a package full of gay porn stickers on the outside and inside there was a diaper, inside the diaper there was 100 SEK and a letter saying that he wanted to buy 4 demos, hahahahaha. My mom wasn’t so happy having packages like that delivered to the house. Hahahahahaha.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Be curious in life and don’t let hate and fear conquer your mind.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Chuck Schuldiner, if he’s even considered a rock star. The way that he was always in the forefront of making music and curious of everything in music and narrowing it down to always sounding like Death is amazing to me.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love the creating part of music. Making new songs, recording, playing live and talking to people is pure joy. The downside is that you always have to be present on social media, coming up with new shit to post. All the stuff that non musicians never think about that takes a lot of time from the creative side.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I don’t know actually. We somehow operate from outside of the major labels and big market businesses. We build our connections through a lot of small DIY labels, distros, zines, radio shows, concert organizers, you name it. We manage to sell out our CD’s, vinyls and merch through the underground DIY connections that we have and it’s an amazing thing to see your stuff being sold to all parts of the world. I just sent packages to Japan. New Zealand, Australia, UK, Ireland, Germany and Belgium. We may not sell 10K of records but the cd and vinyls of our album Salvation through tyranny is on the second press, which means that at least 1200 people own our record so far.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

The Exploited – “Troops of tomorrow”. It never gets old. Still as good as when I heard it the first time.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I personally like vinyl the best because to me it always sounds better but I buy cd’s too and I still listen to tapes. It really doesn’t matter as long as people listen to music and try to find new artists and are curious in their search for new music.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

The last one at the ORWO Haus in Berlin, Germany was great.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Let’s see, I’m a painter (house painter) with my own company so I guess that I would put more effort into my work and my family but I would be a really boring father if I didn’t have the music. Your interests keep you young in mind and I encourage my sons to go for what they are interested in.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Netanyahu, Trump, Putin, Kim Jong-Un, and Mohammed bin Salman. I would tell them of all the horrors and misery that they put the whole world through and serve them a meal to choke on.

What’s next for the band?

Try to do our best promoting our new single and video. Rehearse for an upcoming show and continue to write songs for our next album.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll, or a Tea Cake?

It must be a tea cake.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks a lot for this interview, it’s been a pleasure. Don’t forget to follow us on our socials and if you want to buy our records merch you can do it on:  sickrecy.bandcamp.com or just mail us at: sickrecyband@gmail.com

Cheers/Martin
