EMQs With Risca Faca
23/05/2025

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Brazilian Rock band Risca Faca. Huge thanks to their guitarist, Amando Puente, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is Amando Puente, and I’m the guitarist of the band Risca Faca. The band was created as a result of our vocalist Daniel Leon’s idea, who initially wanted to put together a project to play a set list of original songs mixed with songs influenced by Brazilian north-eastern culture in bars. However, as this developed, the project began to make more sense as a band. Consequently, Daniel began to look for interested musicians and, after the band was formed, we began to develop arrangements for the existing songs, bringing the individual experiences of each member and combining them with the musical premise.

How did you come up with your band name?

The expression “risca faca” has several meanings in Brazil, but it suggests an environment where people are having a good time, with lots of music, dancing, people getting drunk, with a rustic background and crazy customers, where fights and confusion occasionally occur. A fun and chaotic place. We think it perfectly reflects our sound identity.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from the city of Niterói, in Rio de Janeiro. And we can say that it’s not a city or state where Metal, or even Rock N’ Roll, is properly valued. There is a lack of spaces and fundings. However, at the same time, it’s a place full of highly talented and promising bands, who, like us, fight to conquer their space and this has gradually united the authorial rock scene, in recent times.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

We recently released the music video for “Cana Braba”, which is available on all streaming platforms.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Our influences range from Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Alice In Chains, Angra to Jackson do Pandeiro, Nação Zumbi, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Luiz Gonzaga, among other names in Brazilian north-eastern music.

What first got you into music?

Since I was a child, I have always been passionate about the form of expression through music and how it translates to people, whether listening to recordings or live performances. In my case, I ended up choosing the guitar as the main instrument to convey my feelings.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

For me, definitely with Angra. But the rest of the band certainly has their preferences too.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

It’s hard not to mention Rock in Rio. It’s a festival we’ve been to several times and we have an emotional connection to it. It’s part of our upbringing.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We haven’t received any gifts yet, as far as I remember, maybe sharing cachaça at every show is a bit of a weird gift that we give to the audience, but everyone seems to really like it!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Stay tuned, as very soon we will be releasing new songs and scheduling more shows to be even closer to all of you!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Particularly speaking, Andre Matos.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

The whole process of creating music and being on stage is definitely what I like the most. But you can’t romanticize it either. Being a musician and playing rock makes us hate many situations where show producers are unprofessional.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I understand that the way the industry works is a reflection of what is consumed in society. Perhaps giving more space to so many truly talented bands and artists.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

Somewhere In Time – Iron Maiden

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I’m from the CD generation, but I love vinyl and all the care taken with the artistic concept in physical format.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

With Risca Faca, our second show at Audio Rebel and at the 100 bands event, were the most memorable for me.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I think I’m already doing it, which is working in the finance area. But if it weren’t music, I would be balancing it with some area where the creative part was involved.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Rafael Bittencourt, Dustin Kensrue, Robert Downey Jr, Milton Nascimento and Zico

What’s next for the band?

We are currently recording the songs for our next work, which will be released as an EP. At the same time, we are continuing looking for shows throughout Brazil to take our music to new places.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake

Sorry, we’re not British enough to give an answer that makes sense, but in Brazil we love Muffin!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Just to thank you for the space and invite everyone to listen to our music and go to our show, wherever it is.
