EMQ’s With Verba Serpentis

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Austrian Black Metallers, Verba Serpentis. Huge thanks to their Guitarist/ Vocalist, Achlycet, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hello, my name is Achlycet and I play guitar and do the vocals in Verba Serpentis.

The band formed around 2024, although the idea for the band came a bit before that. Initially it was only me and Tenebris. But having the first songs written, we knew we would need another guitar to play the songs live, and that place was taken by Malphas. Later on, in spring 2025, the bass guitar duties were taken over by Somnifer.

So far we’ve released one EP and the recordings for the next one will start very soon.

How did you come up with your band name?

We were searching for a name after we had a couple of songs ready, and Tenebris came up with this idea. It reflects the concept of the band very well (Verba Serpentis = The words of the snake), that’s why we chose it.

What Country / Region are you from, and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from Carinthia, Austria. The Metal scene here is not too big, but we have a dedicated community in Austria. For Carinthia itself, we have quite a few good bands, but not too many metalheads. So, things can be quite challenging, especially for new bands if you don´t have the right contacts.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

“Ophidic Gnosis”, released in October 2024.

We just recently released a music video to the song ‘Monuments of Dust’ (released in September 2025).

Who have been your greatest influences?

We have a lot of influences, but to name some: Dissection, Tsjuder, Mgla, Horna,…

What first got you into music?

It´s for sure a different story for each of us. I (Achlycet) already started very early, like seven years old, with Metal music with bands like Slipknot. And things just evolved further until I got into Extreme Metal.

The way we ended up making/playing music ourselves was different for each one of us as well, but what we all have in common is a passion for Extreme Metal.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

There are many we would like to collaborate with, for example, on tours. To name some, it would be Whoredom Rife, Horna, Watain, ….

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

There are many great festivals, so it´s again hard to choose one specific. Hellfest, PartySan, Inferno, Beyond the Gates, Hole in the Sun, …

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Puh, no idea. We don´t get gifted by fans too often, haha.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Embrace the Black flame and free yourself from the shackles of cosmic slavery.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Jon Nödtveidt

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Playing shows is the thing I enjoy most.

Necessary things that have nothing to do with the music (like social media) are what I hate.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Getting bands an easier way to play shows and to spread their music.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

MGLA – “Exercises in Futility”

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, or Downloads?

I mostly use streaming platforms nowadays. But surely Vinyl and CDs are better.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

We played many great gigs; one was recently at Summermusic Fest in Italy.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

For me, making music is something I need to do. It´s a compulsion, a necessity. I do it because I feel I must, and I can´t go without it. So it´s not really a question of doing something else.
But since I also like sports, I probably would do more sports.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

We do not only have Verba Serpentis but also some other bands (for example Scion of Darkness, Schänder, Draugr). We have a kind of “circle” that people involved in these bands are a part of – called Ordo Obscurae Carinthiae. I would invite them.

What’s next for the band?

We just recently released a music video to “Monuments of Dust”, a song from our first EP.

Otherwise, we are currently finishing the work for our next EP and will start recording by the end of September.

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!

Biscuit!

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks for having us.

Towards the Black flame, see you at a concert!
