Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs, this time with Scottish solo Instrumental Metal project, Obelisk. Huge thanks to them for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the project?
I’m Obelisk! This project is a solo multi-instrumentalist project where I perform everything on the tracks!
How did you come up with the project’s name?
Funny story actually! So, I had the idea for this project years ago, and my ex was going through the “hilarious” of suggesting silly names. One day she suggested Obelisk because she an Obelisk, and it reminded me of Yu-Gi-Oh which was cool! So, it’s one last spiteful swipe at her haha!
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
I’m from Edinburgh! And to tell you the truth the scene is pretty bad. Typically only indie bands get any decent slots.
What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)
My latest release is “Working Class Zero” my next single that drops on the 10th of October!
Who have been your greatest influences?
Would have to say Electric Call Boy, Sleep Token, Bring Me The Horizon, and Green Day!
What first got you into music?
I was always into it as long as I can remember! My older sister is a musician as well so that was a strong influence at the start. Then I started playing drums when I got to high school and I was hooked.
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
Any of the big hitters I mentioned before would be incredible! But other than that, maybe hitting up some other masked musicians like Sfinx.
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Download! Part of the reason I got back to music after a break was realising how much I missed performing after going to a Download festival!
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
All of them have been pretty fantastic so far! Nothing weird just yet!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
That you guys are the best and the support is overwhelming in the best possible way!!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
Has to be Ozzy due to recent events. We could have got more years from him if it wasn’t for that botched surgery.
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
Love the expression and performing. Hate how everything is expensive or requires a cheap workaround.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
AI needs to be booted square in the baws. Can’t believe an AI artist got signed, that’s disgusting.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
“Dookie!” Greatest pop punk album of all time! Hands down!
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?
I like a fully loaded vinyl! Love it as a piece of art!
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
Haven’t performed as Obelisk yet! But hopefully next year!
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Probably something in the fitness industry sadly! Left the industry but I was in it for 10 years.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
If I could invite 5 random cats that would be cool! Either that or just my beloved friends!
What’s next for you?
My album comes out in December! So, seeing where that takes me, but at the moment pushing my presence online, and then hopefully pushing to labels!

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?
So I always and forever will say I’m Scottish not British! But it’s a roll, and if anyone disagrees, they are incorrect!
