Wolvennest. Another fine act emerging from Belgium’s seemingly never-ending conveyor belt of talent. Every time I hear the name or think of the band, my mind’s eye is cast to watching their hit ‘Ritual Lovers’ for the first time during one winter’s evening down a YouTube rabbit hole. Now, they’re looking to expand this range of hits with their 6th studio album, “Procession”. An album that the Gothic Doom Metallers have promised to be their most challenging and expansive release to date.

Well, if you like your Metal low and slow, laced with hypnotic grooves, “Procession” is definitely for you. ‘Another Nail’ is guaranteed to get your feet tapping and hips swinging. For all the spicy grooves and catchy rhythm, there’s an undeniable brooding atmospheric undertone that is as dissonant as it is unsettling! This is definitely a band hellbent on observing the masses and going completely the other way to stand out!

Building on these foundations, ‘Damnation’ introduces a Psychedelic spice to the mix, again, as unsettling and challenging…but in the best way possible! Whereas things have been fairly laid back and tame until now, things definitely start to pick up with the tempo quickening and the distortion cranking up to wall-shaking levels. Bah god, I need to see this live!  Add in some piercing lead guitar riffs, and this is certainly an early highlight from the album for me.

The melodic focal point is shifted towards the cathedral organs during ‘Decharne’, creating a more austere and haunting atmosphere in the process. If you’re looking for atmosphere, ‘Hunters’ has you covered. We’re entering Doom Metal territory with the ferocious and densely weighted guitar riffs and tones! It’s a much-needed injection of variety because, in all honesty, there’s a perception of ideas being dragged too thin and things appearing to be a little repetitive at times. It’s one where you must be willing to invest quite a bit for the payoff. Whether you think that payoff is worth it is really down to you.
