EMQs With Wolver
EMQs With Wolver
Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Swedish Theatrical Alt Rockers, Wolver. Huge thanks to them for taking part.
What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?
I’m Marcus Wedin, singer and guitarist. The band started after Elias, our drummer, and I finished college. We tried a few guitarists before meeting Filip, who helped us really shape our sound and record our first album. When COVID hit, Filip left to focus on family, and Elias and I carried on as a duo. Eventually, we found Erik, our current guitarist, and the chemistry finally came together. That’s how we got to where we are today!
How did you come up with your band name?
It might sound cliché, but I had been looking for a band name, and it came to me in a dream. I wanted something without a specific meaning, just a name that felt right. I woke up at 3 a.m., jotted it down, and the next morning, looking at it, I knew it was perfect. Voila!
What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?
We come from Karlstad, Sweden. The music scene here is dominated by Metal and Swedish Pop, which makes our theatrical rock style a bit different from the norm.
Tell us about your new EP “Act II: Scene I – Birth of an Empire”. What inspired it?
Our lyrics have always leaned political, but for this EP, we wanted to connect with a broader audience. The last track, ‘Prophecy,’ takes a more personal turn, exploring self-doubt. We’ve also kept the cinematic feel from our previous album, but made the music a little more accessible and inviting this time around.
Who have been your greatest influences?
We all have different influences. I’ve always loved Muse and Panic! At the Disco, Elias is into Linkin Park and Good Charlotte, so we share that era and vibe. Erik is a bit of an outsider—he’s inspired by Meshuggah, Mastodon, and even Bach—but he fits perfectly with the band.
What first got you into music?
We’ll let Erik take this one. When he was younger, his brother got him an autograph from Joey Tempest, which inspired him to start playing piano. Over time, he picked up guitar and now plays it like the multi-armed Shiva!
If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?
It would be a great pleasure to collaborate with or open for a band like Avatar. Their unique theatrical style aligns perfectly with ours, and their music is absolutely superb!
If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?
Honestly, any festival that celebrates Rock and theatrical music would be amazing. We love the energy of a live crowd, so anywhere that brings together passionate fans from around the world would be incredible.
What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
The weirdest gift we’ve ever received has to be a VHS of Small Soldiers. Nostalgic as it is, who even has a VCR these days? It came to good use after all—we’ve made it part of our rehearsal room decor!
If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
If you ever go on tour, don’t forget to bring multiple pairs of underwear!
If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?
We’d have to bring back Chester Bennington – otherwise Elias would never forgive us!
What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?
The best part of being a musician is having a creative outlet with close friends. On the other hand, even though it can be fun and rewarding, the constant pressure of social media can be draining.
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
It’s a tricky question, because the industry is always changing, and we’re learning to adapt. That said, we’d love to see artists retain a bigger portion of the profits, which isn’t often the case right now.
Name one of your all-time favourite albums?
It’s hard to pick just one, so we’ll go with three: “Origin of Symmetry” by Muse for Marcus, “Hybrid Theory” by Linkin Park for Elias, and “Crack the Skye” by Mastodon for Erik.
What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?
As boring as it might sound, the convenience of streaming outweighs all other formats. It makes discovering new and exciting music so easy, and we really love that.
What’s the best gig that you have played to date?
The wildest show we’ve played was in Zagreb, Croatia, back in 2019. The crowd was amazing—so much energy and passion right from the first song. We love our Swedish audiences too, but in Croatia it felt like the whole room erupted with us. Truly unforgettable.
If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?
Outside of music, we’re all acoustic consultants, so that’s probably what we’d be doing. But honestly, we could never stop playing music.
Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?
Our dream dinner guests would be John Cleese, Paul McCartney, Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, and Whoopi Goldberg. We can’t really explain why – it would just be legendary!.. Ringo could come too.
What’s next for the band?
For the rest of the year, we plan to release new singles leading up to another EP, aimed for spring 2026. With several gigs already booked and more in the works, there’s plenty to look forward to.
