EMQs with DEATHASSAULT

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with UK Nu-Metalcore band, Death Assault. Huge thanks to them for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

We are DeathAssault and we are Fusion of many subgenres due to our vast range of musical influences. Predominantly we would now consider ourselves to be Nu-Metalcore Fusion. However, we are still very much in touch with our Thrash Metal roots musically.

We formed in 2022, meeting through prior projects and college and bonding over the power of music. Bill Mander (the most recent member) joined after sending the band multiple videos as an audition before being taken into the studio to learn and work on playing songs. We have continued to work on spreading the infection throughout the UK from the first gig we ever publicly played up until now.

Our previous guitarists George Pollard and Jack Madderson had a crucial role in the establishment of what DeathAssault has become.

Leading the charge with Bill Mander, we have worked tirelessly on our upcoming album over the course of this year.

How did you come up with your band name?

This is a question that many people wish to know about so many bands and know their deeper meaning. At the end of the day, it is a summary of emotion and energy…

Watch us live and it just makes sense. Listen to our music and it just makes sense.

DeathAssault is unadulterated, unbridled chaos, agony and anger that is interlaced with every other aspect of the human condition.

Hearing it chanted. Now that lets you feel the weight the name carries.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We originate from the UK in the coastal city of Plymouth where the Metal/Rock scene has begun to expand and thrive over the past 4 years, with the emergence of many new younger bands leading the way for the future of UK Metal music.

It is a tightly knit community of artists who work together, that we are proud to be a part of.

What is your latest release?

Our most recent releases, the first two singles off our upcoming self-titled album are both “ASHES OF REALITY” – released on 31st of October and “WE WILL REMAIN” on the 28th November.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Due to the wide span of influences from each member of DeathAssault it is an amalgamation of many bands that also are not included in the Metal scene.

In terms of Metal, bands such as: Sepultura, Lamb Of God, Acid Bath, Black Sabbath, Slipknot, Blood Incantation etc. There is such a large range of muscial influence in this band that has directed our approach to our music and means that we aren’t stuck in our ways musically, giving us the ability to compose anything we want, no matter how different it is from the last thing.

What first got you into music?

Music has been a pivotal part of all of our lives from a young age, with a dream to one day compose, perform and release music. Regardless of the way we got involved in music, it has stuck with us all for a long time.

We are incredibly infatuated with music and forever grateful to those who pioneered and etched the way for people like us to write and perform what we do.

Music will always be a huge part of our lives.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

That varies from member to member but both Acid Bath and Lamb Of God are bands that would be a dream to collaborate with considering their serious influence on us musically.

But there are so many bands that we dream of collaborating with that it is incredibly hard to label merely one band.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Hellfest (France) is a festival which we would absolutely love to partake in. It is an awesome festival and spanning our reach beyond the UK is not only a dream but a goal for us.

It always has an eclectic range of bands, many of which we adore to the fullest.

So if we had to pick out of the many amazing festivals there are, we’d have to go with Hellfest.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We wouldn’t consider it to be weird, and haven’t received many gifts in our time as a band. However, one thing we’d love to mention is when we received fan art from a fan based within Scotland.

That was incredibly cool to see and very humbling for us as a band. So huge shout out to that person.

We are forever grateful for that!

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

A phrase that comes from one of our songs off the album, which is one that permeates through the band.

“We Will Remain” as a band, as a community. We will stand together united under music, against all adversity.

Music is a powerful art form that brings people together. Nothing can take that away from us.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Ozzy Osbourne. It was a massive hit to us all emotionally in the band and something we’ll never forget. We were tracking instruments for the album when the news broke and that completely stopped us in our tracks.

We couldn’t quite believe that such a figure was lost and so at our following gig we commemorated him by playing his song “Crazy Train”. It was an emotional moment for us and he will always be remembered by many.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

There’s more we love being a band than we hate, but there are definitely some stressful sides of being in a band. Before we touch on that, let’s look at the best parts.

Music. Music is the best part of being in a band. The process of taking an idea, growing it and taking it to recording and the stage. Seeing people enjoy our music, chant our name and chat to us after we’ve played is a feeling that is unrivalled in our lives.

Having that sense of brotherhood and family within a band is another special part, we all have such a special connection to eachother and would go through the deepest pits of hell for one another.

However, being in a band does come with its stressful sides. I think it goes without saying that regardless of the band, finances is a huge struggle. With the various costs required to help us make money such as: merch, travel and gear.

It can get quite tight money wise, yet this isn’t something that gets in the way of our enjoyment. We invest our money in what we love. So there are still two sides to the stressful parts of being in a band.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Streaming profits. Across the majority of streaming platforms the companies who host the music releases make significantly more money than the artists who pour their passion, time and money into it. A very big example of this is Spotify.

Even larger artists tell of how little money they have made off of their releases in comparison to how much money Spotify earns as a one of the leading streaming platforms.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

It’s hard to pick a unified answer to this question, but we can provide you personal favourites from each member.

Bill Mander – “Whoracle” by In flames

Darrell Baker – “When The Kite String Pops” by Acid Bath

Wiktor Weinreb-Osiecki – “Once” by NightWish

Levi Spry – “The Link” by Gojira

Jake Ackrell – “Ascendancy” by Trivium

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

This is a frequently asked question within music. However, it is subjective and down to the person’s listening preferences.

However, digital provides people the ability to listen to music on the go and with ease.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

All of the Devon and Cornwall Metal To The Masses events we have had the pleasure of playing, were by far the best gigs we have ever played.

The crowd response, the sound, yhe lighting and overall energy has been some of the most thrilling moments within the band.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

Although we all predominantly have music as our main passion and life focus, these are lines of work we’d be in if we weren’t musicians.

Jake Ackrell – Tattoo artist

Wiktor Weinreb-Osiecki – Fine arts

Darrell Baker – Zoologist

Levi Spry – Skating

Bill Mander – Surfing/Skating

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Michael Jackson, The Great Peacemaker (founder of the Iroquois confederacy), Lemmy, Alexi Laiho, Bob Marley.

What’s next for the band?

Over the course of this year we have been working on our upcoming self-titled album “DEATHASSAULT” which will be releasing on Friday 13th February 2026.

Following this we’ll be working towards playing bigger and better shows across the UK and extending our reach beyond the coast of Plymouth.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

If we had to pick one term for the bread, it would have to be the bap. However, there is one word that rivals all of them. Scran. Regardless of food type. It always remains to be fitting.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?
