EMQ’s With Dying Awkward Angel

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Italian Melodic Death Metallers, Dying Awkward Angel. Huge thanks to their guitarist, Lorenzo, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hi, my name is Lorenzo, and I have been playing guitar in the band since 2010.  I cooperate on the arrangements and writing lyrics as well. This project was born in 1998 in Torino, founded by Edoardo Demuro, mastermind and leader. The early days were marked by great passion, and we moved in the underground Italian metal scene with good self-productions. After some lineup changes, a steadier situation brought three full-length albums between 2013 and 2025, two of them officially released via Rockshots Records.

How did you come up with your band name?

Our band’s name was an idea of our early singer Alessandro Iraci: You can think about some angels who stare from above, and somehow they are jealous of human nature, so faulty, so real…

and so, watching all of us make mistakes, they lean out too much from their

pearly railings and, in an awkward move, they fall down on Earth.

In this way, they die, or better, they lose their grace and become something else.

Our sound is strongly influenced by the Swedish death metal scene of the 90s,

so you can easily catch the tuning between our name and some cold, melancholic

atmospheres from northern Europe.

And then, we like the ambiguity of this world… The thin line between good and evil

sometimes seems to be a massive wall if you think and speak by stereotypes only.

An angel? A devil? It only depends on the point of view.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from Torino and Gallarate, the north-western area of Italy. I think there are a lot of underrated good bands. Many young guys are coming out, and many old guys like us hold on and continue to support the Italian metal scene. Of course, in the 90s it was easier to play live concerts, today it’s easier to spread your music worldwide on the web, of course.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our last album is “The Missing Frame”, published on the 22nd of August last by Rockshots Records. Please check it out! Moreover, you can watch on YouTube our official video clip taken from this record, the single “The Inner Paradox”.

Who have been your greatest influences?

Of course, our sound comes from 90’s thrash and death metal: In Flames, At the Gates, Carcass, Dark Tranquillity, Slayer, Death, Pantera, and Metallica.

What first got you into music?

I fell in love with distorted guitars when I was a boy, and I listened to the vinyl of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath for the first time. Nevertheless, I was stunned by a Vulgar display of power, which was the time when I decided to learn to play guitar.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

If I had to choose one…Hypocrisy, I think. They are getting old in a very good way, and Peter Tagtgren is a good producer too.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Nowadays, Hellfest is the best one. That would be a dream.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

I really don’t know, I’m sorry

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Spread good music everywhere, and play it loud!

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Chuck f*****g Schuldiner!

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love playing live, creating my own sound and gear… I can’t stand everything you can call “social network”.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

I would cancel this total economic slavery. Nowadays, everybody is afraid of AI-generated music and synthetic art in general, but many years ago, the pop music industry started destroying creativity… they only care about selling a product. There’s no risk, no innovation, only money.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“The sound of perseverance”.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I say vinyl for their audio quality.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

I think the best one was in 2019 in Milano, the Death Rally Festival. Decapitated were the headliners.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I would be in the middle of the sea, fishing for sailfish and tuna.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I would call my four brothers of the band, Edo, Luca, Dado, Miche, and the Pope.

What’s next for the band?

Now it’s time to bring “The missing frame” on tour. This new album will be played very loudly!

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK, either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

I’m afraid I’m too much Italian for such a British question, lol. Is that a roll? Maybe?

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you too! Have a good time and listen to “The Missing Frame”!
