EMQ’s With LEAVE THE WAVE

Hi everyone! Welcome to another EMQs interview, this time with Cypriot Grunge-Rockers Leave The Wave. Huge thanks to their Guitarist, Artemis, for taking part.

What is your name, what do you play and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

Hello, my name is Artemis and I’m the guitarist of the band. We are a four-piece band from Nicosia, Cyprus, formed in 2022. We introduced ourselves to the world with our first single, “Monster,” and last December we released our debut album, “Disturbance”. During this time, we’ve been very active live, playing many local stages and festivals, which has helped us grow and shape our identity as a band.

How did you come up with your band name?

Our band name is inspired by a Cypriot comedy audio story called ‘Giakoumis o Krikos.’ It’s a phrase from the story, and it doesn’t have a deep meaning, but we like it.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We are from Cyprus, a small island with a very active rock and metal scene. There are many bands creating original music, even though the audience is not very big. Everyone is doing their best to keep the scene alive and to help more people connect with this kind of music.

What is your latest release?

Our latest release is “Disturbance”, our debut album.

Who have been your greatest influences?

We draw a lot of inspiration from ’90s and ’00s rock bands such as Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Audioslave.

What first got you into music?

Music got into my life very naturally. Growing up listening to rock music, I felt a strong connection to it and eventually the need to express myself through playing guitar. It became a way for me to release emotions and communicate things I couldn’t explain with words.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician who would it be?

Linkin Park

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

We would love to play Rock im Park. It’s a festival we’ve experienced as part of the audience, and it left a strong impression on us

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

We haven’t received a weird gift yet

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

We love you. Your support gives us the strength and motivation to keep going.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

Kurt Cobain

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

What I enjoy the most about being a musician is being on stage and playing music. What I dislike is that nowadays so much of the music industry seems focused on money rather than the art itself.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

If I could change one thing about the music industry, it would be to focus more on the art and the emotions behind the music, rather than just money and trends. Music should be about expression, not profit.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

“Audioslave” – Audioslave

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

Vinyl, for me. It has the best sound, and there’s something special about holding the album in your hands while listening.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

Opening act for Villagers of Iwannina city

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I’m not a full-time musician, I’m also an agronomist. When I’m not on stage, you’ll usually find me working in the garden.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

Ozzy, Lemmy, Slash, Chris Cornell, and Kurt Cobain. I think I’d need to buy a ton of alcohol for that dinner!

What’s next for the band?

Right now, we’re making plans to play our first shows outside of Cyprus. We’re excited to bring our music to new audiences and share our energy beyond home.

Time for a very British question now. As an alternative to the humble sandwich, is the correct name for a round piece of bread common in the UK either a Bap, a Barm (or Barm Cake), a Batch, a Bun, a Cob, a Muffin, a Roll or a Tea Cake?

I’d go with a bun.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

I’d just say to everyone out there: listen to more rock music, it’s good for your health!
