All heads are gonna roll! That’s right, we’re heading to Sweden for one of the pioneers of extreme music in the country, Vomitory. Beginning life in 1989, they released 8 albums before calling it a day. After realising retirement wasn’t for them, they returned to the studio and the product of that was 2023’s “All Heads Are Gonna Roll”. The critically acclaimed return album lead to bookings on many of the European extreme metal circuits biggest stages. 3 years later, they look to follow up this release with 10th studio album “In Death Throes”.
‘Rapture in Rupture’ kicks things off with authority! No silly gimmicks or introductions, just straight into the tastiest of thrash-death inspired mayhem! The production sounds fierce, bringing out the crack of the snare, the dense rumble of the bass, Erik’s demonic guttural vocals, and the blistering guitars. This sounds promising. ‘For Gore And Country’ follows in a similar pattern with thrash-death inspired riff being lashed out at break neck speed. A similar pattern…and there in lies the problem. Sometimes you just listen to an album multiple times and cannot get into it. This is sadly one of those occasions. Maybe I’ve been spoilt lately with the vast quality of music from the world of extreme metal. Immolation for instance release “Descent” on the same day, which was biblical levels of heavy and epic! Vomitory’s album felt far too repetitive and recycling ideas far too quickly, with few songs except the opener having a true spine and identity or salient features. Which is kind of disappointing considering what huge aspirations I had for this. Don’t get me wrong, it’s well packaged and produced to an excellent standard, but just isn’t connecting with me despite multiple listens.
