EMQs With Gout

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name’s Calum. I play bass in Gout.

The idea of putting a heavy band together came while we were on a writing trip for another band we all play in – Lucia & The Best Boys. We were just chatting about heavy music, and all agreed that playing that kind of music is something we’ve always wanted to do. That was in summer 2024. We quickly got some tunes together and played our first show at Core—festival in Glasgow in August of that year.

How did you come up with your band name?

We have a running list of fictional band names we find funny. Gout was one of them.

What Country / Region are you from, and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

We’re from Glasgow, Scotland. The metal/rock scene is really good. There’s a strong hardcore undercurrent with a lot of DIY gigs, and having multi-venue festivals like Core has really helped bring together a lot of folk who like heavy music.

What is your latest release? (Album, EP, Single, Video)

Our EP, ‘Actual Bastard’ is out on 17th April.

Who have been your greatest influences?

That’s a huge question, and it would differ member-to-member and also according to the context. We all like a wide variety of music and art. I think a common musical denominator for us would be Nirvana, probably.

What first got you into music?

My family.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

Ally and Adam in the band would say Oasis. I wouldn’t.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

Roadburn always looks amazing to play.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Perhaps it says more about us than any fan but we’ve never received such a gift.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Listen to our new EP ‘Actual Bastard’ out 17 April.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

Making music with my friends. There’s nothing to hate about being a musician.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

There are too many things to name just one.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

One of mine is actually fairly recent – Umbilical by Thou.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs or Downloads?

Technically, CDs are the highest quality listening experience…

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

We played a couple of shows supporting our pals in Cwfen in December there and we enjoyed those a lot.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I do other non-musician things which are very non-musician-like.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

I wouldn’t host a dinner party as it’d stress me out too much.

What’s next for the band?

We release an EP on 17 April and play a headline show in Glasgow at the Flying Duck the same night. We’ve pressed a limited run of 100 vinyl, which will be on sale at the show.

What Social Media / Website links do you use to get your music out to people?

Our only social media is Instagram – instagram.com/__gout

Find us on Bandcamp at goutgoutgout.bandcamp.com/

And on the usual streaming services!

There’s a long-standing food-based debate here in the UK. And we’d like your help. So… A Jaffa cake – is it a cake or a biscuit? Discuss!

I think this has been legally settled for VAT purposes that they’re a cake.

Thank you for your time. Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Listen to and buy our music and come to our shows. Thanks.
