EMQ with Vocalist CP from A Permanent Shadow

What is your name, what do you play, and can you tell us a little bit about the history of the band?

My name is CP, I’m the singer in A Permanent Shadow. I formed this project in 2017 and I’m actually the only constant member of this band. So far, we’ve released three albums, with a fourth out in early 2027 and a fifth in the works.

How did you come up with your band name?

I thought it had an interesting ring to it, and it also means a lot of different things, from dark spots on the moon to bouts of depression. I thought it was quite fitting as a name.

What Country / Region are you from and what is the Metal / Rock scene like there?

I am of Austrian origin but have been living in Spain for most of my life. The music scene in Barcelona is quite vibrant, with lots of festivals and arena shows taking place. Sadly, there are not that many grassroots venues left, what with the housing crisis and rents having become very expensive. Many small venues have been driven out of business because of that.

What is your latest release?

We have a new single out called “We’ll Be One”. It comes with a beautifully shot video which we did at a derelict prison center here in Barcelona.

Who have been your greatest influences?

David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed – The Unholy Trinity.

What first got you into music?

The album “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie was a real gate opener for me. When I first heard it, I knew I wanted to get involved in music one way or the other.

If you could collaborate with a current band or musician, who would it be?

There are so many of them. John Grant, The Anchoress, Japanese Breakfast, Charli XCX.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why?

I’d love to play at Fuji Rock in Japan. I love the country, and this festival always has a stellar line-up.

What’s the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?

Hmmm, not many gifts that I can remember. Insults, yes; gifts, no.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?

Listen to our music; it is worth a try.

If you could bring one rock star back from the dead, who would it be?

David Bowie, without a doubt. The concept of him being mortal is something I’m still struggling to come to terms with.

What do you enjoy the most about being a musician? And what do you hate?

I love the studio and playing live, the whole creative process. I don’t like the salesman side of it, the pitching, the schmoozing, the promotion.

If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?

Eliminate the vultures and give more streaming money to the artist.

Name one of your all-time favourite albums?

The most recent Morrissey album, “Make-Up Is A Lie”, is a strong contender for becoming one of my all-time favourites.

What’s best? Vinyl, Cassettes, CD’s or Downloads?

I can´t be bothered, to be honest. I listen to FLAC, WAV and MP3 mainly these days. My hearing is so battered I can’t spot the difference in terms of quality anyway.

What’s the best gig that you have played to date?

A Bowie tribute in January which we were invited to appear on, where we sneaked in a Tin Machine song.

If you weren’t a musician, what else would you be doing?

I’m a trained grief counsellor, so I guess I’d help people make it through hard times.

Which five people would you invite to a dinner party?

My last five girlfriends. It would be Armageddon but fun.

What’s next for the band?

We’ll have a couple more singles out in autumn, and then the new album in early 2027.
